A healthy diet done in children can spur their reading skills, especially during the first three years of schooling.
Thus the conclusions of a study conducted in Finland published in the European Journal of Nutrition, as reported by the NDTV page.
Mentioned, this study involved 161 children in the age range 6-8 years.
The quality of the food they eat is analyzed with the help of food diaries. In addition, their academic skills were tested with standardized tests.
From the study revealed, children who eat foods rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, and unsaturated fats, and low sugar products, better in tests that measure reading ability.
The study also found a positive relationship between diet quality and reading ability.
Children with healthy diets increase their reading ability to be better than those who get poorer intake.
"Another important observation is that the association of dietary quality with reading ability is also independent of many confounding factors, such as socioeconomic status, physical activity, and physical fitness."
So says Eero Haapala, Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland.
Thus, undeniably, a healthy diet is an important factor in supporting learning and academic achievement in children.
"Parents and schools have an important role in making healthy food available to children," Haapala said.
