The Grey Lady Of Lomo

They get so much flack from the old timers,

but Lomography is doing it’s bit to keep film going.

Yes, their stuff is a little expensive for what it is. Yes, most of their marketing is targeted at what could be called “hipsters”. That much is clear.

You can still get some good stuff at Lomography though. I particularly love the Lady Grey 400 speed black and white film. It’s grainy and moody and high-contrast.

I’ve heard that it’s repurposed Tri-X. Some say it’s T-Max. It’s probably more likely that it’s both - that is, they repurposed different types of black and white film at different times. All the ones I’ve ever used have felt like Tri-X.

I think they’ve been instrumental in keeping the film flame burning. Larger companies like Kodak, Fuji and Ilford still make film, but are nowhere as exciting as Lomography - especially when it comes to driving up hype about new film products. Most of the flack comes from old-timers who’ve always shot film since it was the only thing to shoot and thus see right through the Lomo “BS” :)

I for one still love going into their shops and having a look around. I have also tried a whole bunch of their stuff at least once. I have never purchased a camera there, but I own several original versions of what they sell - such as the Smena 8M.

Their products are all made with plastic. If ya can get good shots, use whatever..
