Arc de Triomphe. Not Remarque

in esteem •  7 years ago

The symbol of France's greatest triumph, pride and decor, the Arc de Triomphe was established a year after the battle of Austerlitz. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered to capture the exploits of the French army, which they themselves, according to Roman custom.Only two years were spent building the foundations of the monument. In 1811, the founder of the arch, architect Shalgren died, luck turned away from Napoleon - and its construction was stopped. The great commander could not see the arch, it was completed only in 1836.But he can pass under it - Napoleon's ashes, sent to Paris from St. Helena, transported under the arch on December 15, 1840 - n. In addition to these posthumous honors Napoleon is Thiers, Gambetta, Victor Hugo, Lazare Carnot, McMahon, General Foch and Joffre, General Philippe Leclerc, Marshal de Lattre de Tassigny. The tower tower recorded the victory of the Napoleonic army (lower right, Krasnoe, Polotsk, and Smolensk, and since this was a Russian campaign in 1812, the status of victory raised doubts)
And on the inside - 660 names of generals during the Revolution and the First Empire. The names of people killed in battle are underlined.
You can climb the arch in the newly installed elevator, although that does not always work. And you can climb the beautiful spiral staircase inside the poles.
