A misguided Brahmin and robberies who seek advantage by mistaken means
"ဆံုးျဖတ္ခ်က္မွားေသာ ပုဏၰားႏွင့္ မမွန္မကန္နည္းလမ္းျဖင့္ ကိုယ္က်ိဳးရွာေသာ ခိုးသားဓားျပမ်ား"

Once on a time when Brahmadatta was reigning in Benares, there was a brahmin in a village who knew the charm called Vedabba. Now this charm, so they say, was precious beyond all price. For, if at a certain conjunction of the planets the charm was repeated and the gaze bent upwards to the skies, straightway from the heavens there rained the Seven Things of Price,—gold, silver, pearl, coral, catseye, ruby, and diamond.

ေရွးအခါက ဗာရာဏသီျပည္တြင္ ျဗဟၼဒတ္မင္းၾကီး ထီးနန္းစိုးစံစဥ္ ရြာတစ္႐ြာတြင္ ေဝဒဗၺမႏၲာန္ကို တတ္ကၽြမ္းေသာ ပုဏၰားတစ္ဦးရွိခဲ့သည္။ ဤမႏၲာန္မွာ အဖိုးမျဖတ္ႏိုင္ေလာက္ေအာင္ တန္ဖိုးရွိသည္ဟု ဆိုၾက၏။ အေၾကာင္းမွာ ျဂိဳလ္နကၡတ္ တုိက္ဆိုင္မႈရွိခိုက္ မႏၲာန္႐ြတ္ဖတ္ျပီး ေကာင္းကင္ကို စူးစူးစိုက္စုိက္ ေမာ္ၾကည့္လွ်င္ ေကာင္းကင္ေပၚမွ ေ႐ႊ၊ ေငြ၊ ပုလဲ၊ သႏၲာ၊ ေၾကာင္မ်က္႐ြဲ၊ ပတၱျမား၊ စိန္ ခုႏွစ္မ်ိဳးေသာ ရတနာမိုး ခ်က္ခ်င္း ႐ြာခ်ေသာေၾကာင့္ျဖစ္သည္။

In those days the Bodhisatta was a pupil of this brahmin ; and one day his master left the village on some business, and came with the Bodhisatta to the country of Ceta.
In a forest by the way dwelt five hundred robbers who made the way impassable. And these caught the Bodhisatta and the Vedabba-brahmin.

ထိုအခ်ိန္က ဘုရားေလာင္းသည္ ပုဏၰားၾကီး၏ တပည့္တစ္ဦးျဖစ္၏။ တစ္ေန႔သ၌ ဆရာပုဏၰားသည္ စီးပြားေရးကိစၥတစ္ခုျဖင့္ ႐ြာမွထြက္ျပီး ေစတတိုင္းသို႔ ဘုရားေလာင္းႏွင့္အတူ သြားေရာက္သည္။
လမ္းခုလပ္ရွိ ေတာအုပ္တစ္ခုတြင္ ျဖတ္သန္းသြားလာ၍ မရေအာင္ လမ္းပိတ္စို႔ေလ့ရွိေသာ ခိုးသားငါးရာ ေနထိုင္လွ်က္ရွိသည္။ သူတို႔သည္ ဘုရားေလာင္းႏွင့္ ေဝဒဗၺပုဏၰားၾကီးကို ဖမ္းဆီးလိုက္ၾက၏။

When they had caught two prisoners, they used to despatch one to fetch the ransom. If they captured a father and a son, they told the father to go for the ransom to free his son ; if they caught a mother and her daughter, they sent the mother for the money; if they caught two brothers, they let the elder go, if they caught a teacher and his pupil, it was the pupil they set free. In this case, therefore, they kept the Vedabba-brahmin, and sent the Bodhisatta for the ransom.

သူတို႔သည္ တရားခံႏွစ္ေယာက္ဖမ္းမိလွ်င္ ဖမ္းဆီးထားသူကို ျပန္လာေရြးရန္ တစ္ေယာက္ကို ေငြယူခိုင္းေလ့ရွိ၏။ အကယ္၍ ဖခင္ႏွင့္သားကို ဖမ္းမိလွ်င္ သားလြတ္ေျမာက္ေရးအတြက္ ေငြသြားယူရန္ ဖခင္ကို ေစခိုင္း၏။ မိခင္ႏွင့္သမီးကို ဖမ္းမိလွ်င္ ေငြယူသြားရန္ မိခင္ကို ေစခိုင္း၏။ ညီအစ္ကိုႏွစ္ေယာက္ ဖမ္းမိလွ်င္ အၾကီးျဖစ္သူကို ေငြယူသြားခိုင္း၏။ ဆရာႏွင့္ တပည့္ကို ဖမ္းမိလွ်င္ တပည့္ကို ေငြသြားယူရန္ လႊတ္ေပးလိုက္၏။ ထို႔ေၾကာင့္ ဤကိစၥတြင္ ေဝဒဗၺပုဏၰားၾကီးကို ေခၚထားျပီး ဘုရားေလာင္းကို ေငြယူသြားရန္ ေစလႊတ္ၾကသည္။

And the Bodhisatta said with a bow to his master, "In a day or two I shall surely come back; have no fear; only fail not to do as I shall say. Today will come to pass the conjunction of the planets which brings about the rain of the Things of Price. Take heed lest, yielding to this mishap, you repeat the charm and call down the precious shower. For, if you do, calamity will certainly befall both you and this band of robbers." With this warning to his master, the Bodhisatta went his way in quest of the ransom.

ဘုရားေလာင္းသည္ ဆရာကို ဦးညႊတ္ဂါရဝျပဳရင္း "တစ္ရက္ ႏွစ္ရက္အတြင္း ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ေသခ်ာေပါက္ ျပန္လာပါမယ္။ မစိုးရိမ္ပါနဲ႔။ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ေျပာတဲ့အတိုင္းေတာ့ မလုပ္မိပါေစနဲ႔။ ဒီေန႔ ရတနာမိုး႐ြာသြန္းမႈ ျဖစ္ေပၚေစမယ့္ ျဂိဳလ္နကၡတ္ တိုက္တိုက္ဆိုင္ဆိုင္ ျဖတ္သြားမယ္။ အနည္းငယ္ထိခိုက္မွာကို စိုးရိမ္ျပီး မႏၲာန္႐ြတ္ကာ ရတနာမိုး ေခၚတာမလုပ္ဖို႔ အေလးဂ႐ုျပဳပါ။ အေၾကာင္းမွာ လုပ္လိုက္လွ်င္ ဆရာႏွင့္ ဤခိုးသားဓားျပအဖြဲ႕ ကံဆိုးမိုးေမွာင္က်မွာမို႔ျဖစ္ပါတယ္" ဟု မွာၾကားသည္။ ဘုရားေလာင္းသည္ ဤသို႔ ဆရာကို သတိေပးစကားဆိုျပီး ျပန္ေပးေငြရွာရန္ ခရီးထြက္သြား၏။

At sunset the robbers bound the brahmin and laid him down. Just at this moment the full moon rose over the eastern horizon, and the brahmin, studying the heavens, knew that the great conjunction was taking place. '"Why," thought he, "should I suffer this misery? By repeating the charm I will call down the precious rain, pay the robbers the ransom, and go free." So he called out to the robbers,
"Friends, why do you take me a prisoner"
"To get aransom, reverend sir," said they.
"Well, if that is all you want," said the brahmin, "make haste and untie me; have my head bathed, and new clothes put on me; and let me be perfumed and decked with flowers. Then leave me to myself."
The robbers did as he bade them.

ေနဝင္ခ်ိန္တြင္ သူခိုးဓားျပမ်ားသည္ ပုဏၰားၾကီးကို ၾကိဳးႏွင့္ခ်ည္ေႏွာင္ျပီး လွဲထားလိုက္သည္။ ထိုအခိုက္တြင္ လျပည့္ဝန္းသည္ အေရွ႕ မိုးကုပ္စက္ဝိုင္းမွ ေပၚထြက္လာ၏။ ပုဏၰားၾကီးသည္ ေကာင္းကင္ကို ေလ့လာၾကည့္ရာ ထူးထူးျခားျခား နကၡတ္တာရာယွဥ္စပ္မႈ ျဖစ္ေပၚေနေၾကာင္း သိရွိသြား၏။ "ဘာျဖစ္လို႔ ဒီဒုကၡခံေနမွာလဲ။ မႏၲာန္႐ြတ္ဖတ္ကာ ရတနာမိုးေခၚျပီး ဒီသူခိုးဓားျပေတြကို ျပန္ေပးဆြဲေငြေပးလိုက္ရင္ လြတ္ေျမာက္ျပီ" ဟု စဥ္းစားလိုက္သည္။ ထို႔ေၾကာင့္ သူခိုးဓားျပမ်ားကို လွမ္းေခၚလိုက္သည္။
"မိတ္ေဆြတို႔ ဘာျဖစ္လို႔ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ကို အက်ဥ္းသားအျဖစ္ ေခၚထားတာလဲ"
"ျပန္ေ႐ြးေငြရေအာင္လို႔ပါ ဆရာ" ဟု ေျဖၾက၏။
"ေကာင္းျပီ သင္တို႔အားလံုး အလိုရွိတာ အဲဒါဆိုရင္ အလ်င္အျမန္ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ကို ၾကိဳးေျဖေပးျပီး ဦးေခါင္းကို ေရေဆးေပးပါ။ အဝတ္အစားအသစ္ ဝတ္ဆင္ေပးပါ။ အေမႊးနံ႔သာ ျဖန္းေပးပါ။ ပန္းမ်ားႏွင့္ တန္ဆာဆင္ေပးပါ။ အဲဒီေနာက္ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္တစ္ဦးတည္း ထားေပးပါ" ဟု ပုဏၰားၾကီးက ေျပာဆို၏။
သူခိုးဓားျပမ်ားသည္ သူေျပာသည့္အတိုင္း လုပ္ေဆာင္ေပးၾက၏။

And the brahmin, marking the conjunction of the planets, repeated his charm with eyes uplifted to the heavens. Forthwith the Things of Price poured down from the skies ! The robbers picked them all up, wrapping their booty into bundles with their cloaks. Then with their brethren they marched away; and the brahmin followed in the rear. But, as luck would have it, the party was captured by a second band of five hundred robbers!

ပုဏၰားၾကီးသည္ နကၡတ္တာရာ ယွဥ္စပ္မႈျဖစ္ေပၚေနစဥ္ ေကာင္းကင္သို႔ ေမာ္ၾကည့္လွ်က္ မႏၲာန္ကို႐ြတ္ဖတ္လိုက္သည္။ ေကာင္းကင္မွ ခ်က္ခ်င္း ရတနာမိုးမ်ား ႐ြာခ်ေလသည္။ သူခိုးဓားျပမ်ားသည္ အားလံုးကို ေကာက္ယူျပီး ပစၥည္းမ်ားကို ဝတ္ရံုျဖင့္ထုတ္ၾက၏။ ထို႔ေနာက္ အက်ိဳးတူညီအစ္ကိုမ်ားႏွင့္အတူ ေျပးထြက္သြားၾကသည္။ ပုဏၰားၾကီးသည္ ေနာက္ဆံုးမွ လိုက္သြားခဲ့၏။ ကံအားေလ်ာ္စြာ ထိုသူတို႔ကို ဒုတိယ သူခိုးဓားျပငါးရာအဖြဲ႕မွ ဖမ္းမိသြားသည္။

"Why do you seize us? " said the first to these cond band.
"For booty," was the answer.
"If booty is what you want, seize on that brahmin, who by simply gazing up at the skies brought down riches as rain. It was he who gave us all that we have got."
So the second band of robbers let the first band go, and seized on the brahmin, crying, "Give us riches too!"
"It will be a year later when the requisite conjunction of the planets takes place again. If you will be to wait till then, I will invoke the precious shower for you." said the brahmin.

"ဘာေၾကာင့္ ငါတို႔ကို ဖမ္းတာလဲ" ဟု ပထမအဖြဲ႕ ဒုတိယအဖြဲ႕ကို ေမး၏။
"ပစၥည္းေတြလုယူဖို႔" ဟု ေျဖဆို၏။
"လုယက္ပစၥည္းေတြကို လိုခ်င္ရင္ ဟိုပုဏၰားၾကီးကို ဖမ္းပါ။ ေကာင္းကင္ကို ေငးၾကည့္ျပီး ရတနာေတြကို မိုး႐ြာသလို အလြယ္တကူ က်လာေစတာသူပဲ။ ငါတို႔ရထားတာ အားလံုးကို သူေပးတာပဲ"။
ထိုအခါ ဒုတိယ သူခိုးဓားျပအုပ္စုသည္ ပထမအုပ္စုကို လႊတ္ေပးျပီး ပုဏၰားၾကီးကို ဖမ္းဆီးကာ "ငါတို႔ကိုလည္း ရတနာေတြေပးပါ" ဟု ေတာင္းဆိုၾကသည္။
"အဲဒါဟာ လိုအပ္ေသာ နကၡတ္တာရာယွဥ္စပ္မႈ ေနာက္တစ္ၾကိမ္ျဖစ္ေပၚတဲ့ ေနာက္ႏွစ္မွ ရမွာပါ။ အကယ္၍ သင္တို႔ အဲဒီအခ်ိန္ထိ ေစာင့္ႏိုင္မယ္ဆိုရင္ သင္တို႔အတြက္ ရတနာမိုး႐ြာေအာင္ ေတာင္းခံေပးပါမယ္" ဟု ပုဏၰားၾကီးက ရွင္းျပ၏။

"Rascal brahmin!" cried the angry robbers, "you made the other band rich but now hands-off and want us to wait a whole year! " And they cut him in two with a sharp sword, and flung his body in the middle of the road. Then hurrying after the first band of robbers, they killed every man of them too in hand-to-hand fight, and seized the booty. Next, they divided into two companies and fought among themselves, company against company, till two hundred and fifty men were slain. And so they went on killing one another, till only two were left alive. Thus did those thousand men come to destruction.

ေဒါသထြက္ေနေသာ သူခိုးဓားျပမ်ားက "ကလိမ္ကက်စ္ ပုဏၰား၊ အျခားတစ္ဖြဲ႕ကိုေတာ့ ခ်မ္းသာေအာင္ လုပ္ေပးတယ္၊ အခုက်ေတာ့ လက္ေရွာင္ျပီး တို႔ကို တစ္ႏွစ္လံုးေစာင့္ခိုင္းတယ္" ဟု ေအာ္ဟစ္ေျပာဆိုၾက၏။ သူတို႔သည္ ပုဏၰားၾကီးကို ဓားထက္ထက္ႏွင့္ ႏွစ္ပိုင္းလွီးျပီး ခႏၶာကိုယ္ကို လမ္းအလယ္၌ ပစ္ထားေလသည္။ ထို႔ေနာက္ ပထမသူခိုးဓားျပအဖြဲ႕ေနာက္သို႔ အလွ်င္အျမန္လိုက္ျပီး ယင္တို႔အားလံုးကိုလည္း အနီးကပ္တိုက္ခိုက္ကာ သတ္ျဖတ္ပစ္ၾက၏။ တစ္ဖန္ သူတို႔အဖြဲ႕တြင္လည္း ႏွစ္စုကြဲသြားျပီး လူေပါင္း ႏွစ္ရာ့ငါးဆယ္ ေသဆံုးသည္အထိ တစ္စုႏွင့္ တစ္စု အျပန္အလွန္တိုက္ခိုက္ၾက၏။ ဒီလိုႏွင့္ လူႏွစ္ေယာက္သာ အသက္ရွင္က်န္သည္အထိ အခ်င္းခ်င္းသတ္ျဖတ္ၾကသည္။ ဤသို႔ျဖင့္ လူေပါင္းတစ္ေထာင္ ေသေက်ပ်က္စီးျခင္းသို႔ ေရာက္ၾကကုန္၏။

Now, when the two survivors had managed to carry off the treasure they hid it in the jungle near a village; and one of them sat there, sword in hand, to guard it, whilst the other went into the village to get rice and have it cooked for supper.
"Covetousness is the root of ruin!" mused he that stopped by the treasure. " When my mate comes back, he'll want half of this. Suppose I kill him the moment he gets back." So he drew his sword and sat waiting for his comrade's return.
Meanwhile, the other had equally reflected that the booty had to be halved, and thought to himself, "Suppose I poison the rice, and give it him to eat and so kill him, and have the whole of the treasure to myself."

အသက္ရွင္က်န္ရစ္သူ ႏွစ္ဦးသည္ ႐ြာတစ္႐ြာအနီးရွိ ေတာထဲတြင္ ဝွက္ထားခဲ့ေသာ ရတနာမ်ားကို သယ္ယူရန္ စီစဥ္ေသာအခါ တစ္ဦးက ရတနာမ်ားကို ေစာင့္ၾကပ္ရန္ ဓားကိုင္၍ ထိုင္ေနခဲ့၏။ အျခားတစ္ဦးက ဆန္ရွာျပီး ညစာအတြက္ ခ်က္ျပဳတ္ရန္ ႐ြာထဲဝင္ခဲ့၏။ "ဥစၥာဓနကို ငမ္းငမ္းတက္ျခင္းဟာ ပ်က္စီးျခင္း၏ အေၾကာင္းျဖစ္တယ္"။ "ငါ့မိတ္ေဆြ ျပန္လာတဲ့အခါ သူက တစ္ဝက္ခြဲယူမယ္။ သူျပန္ေရာက္တာႏွင့္ သတ္ပစ္မယ္" ဟု ရတနာမ်ားအနီးတြင္ ရပ္ေစာင့္ေနသူက စဥ္းစား၏။ ထိုသို႔စဥ္းစားျပီး ဓားကို ဓားအိမ္မွဆြဲထုတ္ကာ သူ၏ ရဲေဘာ္ရဲဘက္ ျပန္အလာကို ထိုင္ေစာင့္ေနသည္။ ထိုအခ်ိန္တြင္ အျခားတစ္ဦးကလည္း တိုက္ခိုက္လုယက္ရာက ရခဲ့တဲ့ပစၥည္းေတြကို ထက္ဝက္ပိုင္းေပးရမွာဟု ထို႔နည္းတူ စဥ္းစားျပီး "ထမင္းထဲကို အဆိပ္ခတ္ျပီး သူ႔ကိုေကၽြးသတ္မယ္။ ျပီးတာနဲ႔ ရတနာအားလံုးကို တစ္ေယာက္တည္းယူမယ္" ဟု စိတ္ကူးေလသည္။

Accordingly, when the rice was boiled, he first ate his own share, and then put poison in the rest, which he carried back with him to the jungle. But when he had set it down, the other robber cut him in two with his sword, and hid the body away in a secluded spot. Then he ate the poisoned rice, and died then and there. Thus, by reason of the treasure, not only the brahmin but all the robbers came to destruction.

စိတ္ကူးအတိုင္းပင္ ထမင္းက်က္ေသာအခါ သူ၏ ေဝစုကို အရင္စားျပီးေနာက္ က်န္ထမင္းထဲသို႔ အဆိပ္ခတ္ကာ ေတာထဲသို႔ သယ္ယူသြား၏။ သို႔ေသာ္ ထမင္းတည္ခင္းျပီးသည္ႏွင့္ အျခားသူခိုးဓာျပက သူကို ဓားျဖင့္ခုတ္ပိုင္းကာ ခႏၶာကိုယ္ကို ေခ်ာင္က်က်ေနရာတြင္ ဝွက္ထားလိုက္သည္။ ထို႔ေနာက္ အဆိပ္ခတ္ထားေသာ ထမင္းကို စားျပီး သူလည္း ထိုေနရာမွာပင္ ေသဆံုးသြားသည္။ ဤသို႔ျဖင့္ ရတနာမ်ားကို အေၾကာင္းျပဳ၍ ပုဏၰားၾကီးသာမက သူခိုးဓားျပအားလံုးပါ ေသေက်ပ်က္စီးကုန္ၾကသည္။

Howbeit, after a day or two the Bodhisatta came back with the ransom. Not finding his master where he had left him, but seeing treasure strewn all round about, his heart misgave him that, in spite of his advice, his master must have called down a shower of treasure from the skies, and that all must have perished in consequence ; and he proceeded along the road. On his way he came to where his master's body lay cloven in twain. " Alas !" he cried, "he is dead through not heeding my warning." Then with gathered sticks he made a pyre and burnt his master's body.

သို႔ေစကာမူ တစ္ရက္ ႏွစ္ရက္ၾကာျပီးေနာက္ ဘုရားေလာင္းသည္ ျပန္ေပးဆြဲထားသူကိုေ႐ြးရန္ ေငြမ်ားႏွင့္ ျပန္လာခဲ့သည္။ သူထြက္လာခဲ့ေသာ ေနရာတြင္ ဆရာကို မေတြ႔ရဘဲ ပတ္ပတ္လည္တြင္ ရတနာမ်ား ျပန္႔က်ဲေနသည္ကိုသာ ေတြ႔ရေသာအခါ သူက အၾကံျပဳခဲ့ေပမယ့္ ဆရာျဖစ္သူက ေကာင္းကင္မွ ရတနာမိုး႐ြာေအာင္ လုပ္ေဆာင္ခဲ့တာျဖစ္မည္၊ ထိုအက်ိဳးဆက္ေၾကာင့္ အားလံုး ေသေက်ပ်က္စီးကုန္တာျဖစ္မည္ဟု စိတ္ထဲတြင္ သုိ႔ေလာသို႔ေလာႏွင့္ လမ္းအတိုင္း ဆက္လိုက္သြားသည္။
လမ္းတြင္ ဆရာျဖစ္သူ၏ ႏွစ္ပိုင္းျပတ္ေနေသာ ကိုယ္ခႏၶာ အစိတ္အပိုင္းမ်ား ပစ္ထားရာေနရာသို႔ ေရာက္သြား၏။ "အလို ျဖစ္မွျဖစ္ေလ။ "ငါ့ သတိေပးစကားကို အေရးမစိုက္လို႔ သူေသရတာပဲ" ဟု ေအာ္ဟစ္ငိုေၾကြး၏။ ထို႔ေနာက္ ထင္းေခ်ာင္းမ်ားစုစည္းကာ မီး႐ႈိ႕စင္ျပဳလုပ္ျပီး ဆရာျဖစ္သူ၏ ကိုယ္ခႏၶာကို မီးသျဂႋဳလ္လိုက္သည္။

Further along the road, he came upon the five hundred robbers' and further still upon the two hundred and fifty, and so on by degrees until at last he came to where lay only two corpses. So on he went till he found the path by which with the treasure they had turned into the jungle; and there he found the heap of bundles of treasure, and one robber lying dead with his rice-bowl overturned at his side. Realising the whole story at a glance, the Bodhisatta set himself to search for the missing man, and at last found his body in the spot where it had been flung.

လမ္းအတိုင္းဆက္သြားရာ ခိုးသားငါးရာ၏ ကိုယ္ခႏၶာမ်ားရွိရာေနရာသို႔ ေရာက္သြား၏။ ဆက္သြားရာ ခိုးသား ႏွစ္ရာ့ငါးဆယ္စသျဖင့္ တစ္စတစ္စႏွင့္ ေနာက္ဆံုးတြင္ လူေသအေလာင္း ႏွစ္ေလာင္းတည္း ရွိေသာေနရာသို႔ ေရာက္သြားသည္။ ထိုသို႔ျဖင့္ ေတာထဲသို႔ ရတနာမ်ားသယ္ယူသြားေသာ လမ္းကို ေတြ႔သည္အထိ ဆက္သြား၏။ ထိုေနရာတြင္ ရတနာထုပ္အပံုလိုက္ႏွင့္ ေဘးတြင္ ထမင္းခြက္ေမွာက္လွ်က္ႏွင့္ လဲက်ေသဆံုးေနေသာ ခိုးသားတစ္ေယာက္၏ ကိုယ္ခႏၶာကို ျမင္ေတြ႕သြား၏။ ျဖစ္စဥ္တစ္ခုလံုးကို ဖ်တ္ခနဲ သေဘာေပါက္သြားျပီး ေပ်ာက္ဆံုးေနသူကို ရွာေဖြရာ ပစ္ထားေသာ ေနရာတြင္ ထိုသူ၏ ခႏၶာကိုယ္ကို ေတြ႔ရွိသြားသည္။

Thus spoke the Bodhisatta, "And even as my master's misguided and misplaced effort in causing the rain of treasure to fall from heaven wrought both his own death and the destruction of others and every other man who by mistaken means seeks his own advantage shall utterly perish." Then the Bodhisattha contrived to carry the treasure to his own home and he lived out his term of life in the exercise of almsgiving and other good works. And when his life closed, he departed to the heaven.
