Diphtheria vaccine is already widely available and may even have been given since you were very young. However, you can still meet with someone who has diphtheria and did not close the possibility of contracting. The symptoms of the disease include:
- The presence of grayish white patches on the back of the throat
- High body temperature, which reaches up to 38C (100.4F), even more
- Sore throat
- Shortness and difficulty breathing
Older people and people with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of contracting. If left unchecked, diphtheria can be fatal and may lead to potentially life-threatening complications due to inflammation of the heart or myocarditis, shortness of breath and problems with the nervous system.
