Music: Five from the Seventies Part One Challenge

in esteem •  6 years ago

It has taken me a little longer than I expected to circle back to this topic.

@slobberchops posted a while ago about his daughter doesn't like today's music and she much prefers the "older" stuff.

In an effort to curate some good stuff for her to check out, he started the Six from the Sixties challenge and now the Five from the Seventies challenge which he has split into to parts to help separate the decade up.

Here are the rules from his original post

Link FIVE singles from the 1970’s and let us know why they are memorable to you.
One from 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974
Make sure they are not too obscure, we are trying to teach the younger readers what was good, not about old ‘B-sides’.
State the year of release, we are trying to educate people!
Use the tag #seventieschallenge
Add a Wikipedia link to each song so the uneducated can learn a little about the song. If there isn’t one available, then choose something a little more popular.

Okay, so it took more time to get that table setup than it probably will to actually write this post and it still isn't right. If someone wants to comment and explain to me how to get rid of the white spaces in a single column table I would greatly appreciate it.

On to the music!

Roger Whitaker - New world in the Morning (1970)

I am a big fan of Roger Whitaker. I just dig his voice. It is very distinct and it is the kind of thing that can just lull you into a pretty meditative state. Plus he can whistle like a freak of nature!

This song was realeased in 1970 as a single apparently and the full album was realeased in 1971. That is what I am getting from Wikipedia anyway. I really feel like his full catalog deserves a listen though.

If you want to hear one of the most recongnizeable baritones in the world, look no farther than Roger Whitaker. People might giggle at you a little for digging his style of music, but I challenge them to whistle like he can!

Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds - Don't Pull your Love (1971)

This is just a good fun song. Sadly it was really their only big hit.

It is sad because the lead singer has a pretty pleasant and distinct voice in my opinion. It actually reminds me a little of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. Just without the creepiness of hooking up with young girls.

If you don't get that reference just Google Gary Puckett and the Union Gap.

Looking Glass - Brandy (1972)

I know a lot of great music from the 70's, but I am not sure about the years. I did a Google Seach for 1972 hits and I have to tell you, there were a ton of great songs in 1972. It was really hard to pick one specific song.

Then I saw this one. My dad was in the Navy and my mom had metione more than once that this was a song she would often listen to when he was gone.

Sadly, there seems to have been a lot of one hit wonders from the 70's. This song was apparently no exception.

Gladys Knight and the Pips - Midnight Train to Georgia (1973)

This song is a true classic. There isn't a whole lot to say about it. You just need to listen to it once or twice and bask in the awesomeness that it possesses.

Trust me by the third time you listen to it, you won't be able to keep yourself from doing the Woo Woo along with the Pips!

Andy Kim - Rock Me Gently (1974)

It's funny because I feel like I am pulling a lot of songs from the Guardians of the Galaxy sound track. That isn't intentional, it is just a kick butt soundtrack.

This song was another sort of one hit wonder. I really think that Spotify or XM/Sirius should dedicate a whole channel to one hit wonders that would be an awesome channel to listen to.

As I was staying though, this song is just a grooving 70's classic. Bust out your 70's attire and cut a rug to this gem!

That's all I've got for this challenge. I had a lot going on today and my time was split between a lot of things. I hope that doesn't come through too much.

I can't get behind any of these tracks, they are all too soft. In fact the best track you mention, creepiness and all, is "Young Girl."

"Young girl, get out of my mind,
My love for you is way out of line."

Game on!

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

To each his own! The 70s were kind of mellow in general though. Way too much material to choose from. I am a fan of all styles so I had plenty of great songs to choose from.

Those are fantastic choices! I'd forgotten all about Roger Whittaker. He was a family favourite in our house, especially his single "Durham Town" (maybe because we used to holiday on Lindisfarne, near Durham, every year). Talking of which, I was going to include a song from the group Lindisfarne in my choices, but none of their songs have a Wikipedia entry!
I'd never heard "Don't Pull Your Love" before. I do remember "Young Girl" - I just loved that record. They used to play it over and over again at our local swimming pool. Now in light of what you say, that seems a bit weird... but surely it's about a man rejecting the advances of an underage girl.
I love all of your other choices too. That Andy Kim record is a classic! He must have been the original Medallion Man! It's funny that you say "cut a rug" because he had a rug on his chest! They don't make em like that any more haha.

Awesome info in your comment! I love it. I was hoping I would get some responses from some of the South African users on here about Roger Whitaker. I am not sure if they have a fondness for him or if they are just sick of him 😁

You'll have to ask @lizelle :)

Much different than mine stuff, but I would expect it as you are on the other side of the pond and have exposure to different music. I remember Roger Whitaker, but not in the fond sense you do!! ;)

That's too bad, I get he is probably an acquired taste. It was hard picking only one song. I truly love this era and all of the genres within it.

I think my mum was a fan. Its so long ago. it did bring a memory back though!

That's a good 5. Very nicely done. Mine is still in the making, but I can promise you there will be no disco, ever. Ahahahahaha

I've had a less than stellar week. I'll get this 5 out in time for the next one, promise!

I've been known to jam to some disco every now and then so you would get no judgement from me. Hopefully things turn around for you!

Such a cool selection, all Ons I know but I realised i Did not have any of Roger Whittaker in my playlists so just added a few

He is pretty mellow compared to a lot of other artists but like I said, I really dig his voice.
