My own Lyrics Challenge 1953 How Much is That Doggy In The Window bxlphabet 1.jpg

The lyrics of “(How Much is That) Doggy In The Window” are a plea to buy a dog from a pet store that has caught the interest of a passerby. The original recording included the sounds of dogs barking, but the sounds were made by band members.

The song has became a very popular nursery song. At the time of release it had school children "yipping," and sales of dogs increased.

Another effect came years later, as this song portrayed the very much unloved pet shop industry. In 2009, Patti Page recorded a new version of the song with a new title ("Do You See That Doggie in the Shelter") with the hopes of increasing the adoption of homeless animals from animal shelters instead of purchasing from pet stores.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1953. “(How Much is That) Doggy In The Window” reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart in 1953, stayed in that spot for 8 weeks, selling over over two million copies. It was Number 3 on the year-end chart.

(How Much is That) Doggy In The Window by Patti Page is the most famous and enduring rendtion.

And here is a parody of the song, released weeks after by Homer & Jethro, "the thinking man's hillbillies” and also going to Number 1 on the country charts:

(How Much is That) Doggy In The Window Lyrics - Bob Merrill

How much is that doggie in the window? (woof woof)
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that doggie in the window? (woof woof)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I must take a trip to California
And leave my poor sweetheart alone
If he has a dog, he won't be lonesome
And the doggie will have a good home

How much is that doggie in the window? (woof woof)
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that doggie in the window? (woof woof)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I read in the papers there are robbers (arf arf)
With flashlights that shine in the dark
My love needs a doggie to protect him
And scare them away with one bark

I don't want a bunny or a kitty
I don't want a parrot that talks
I don't want a bowl of little fishies
He can't take a goldfish for a walk

How much is that doggie in the window? (woof woof)
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that doggie in the window? (woof woof)
I do hope that doggie's
I do hope that doggie's
I do hope that doggie's for sale
