The lyrics of “Mr. Sandman” tell the coming-of-age hopes of a young woman looking for a mate. The “Mr. Sandman” of the song is a mythical character who is supposed to summon this beau up for her.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1955. Though Pat Ballard had recorded a version of his song earlier, it is the version by the girl group “The Chordettes” which became a hit. This recording rose to number 1 on the Billboard chart upon release and was number 12 for the year.

Since then, the song has had many covers over the years and remains a favorite of many. It was entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002 and was also named one of the "Songs of the Century" by the National Endowment for the Arts in the US.

The Chordettes performed the song live often, and here is a version from 1958:

This Emmylou Harris version was another hit for the song in 1981.

Mr. Sandman - Pat Ballard

Mr. Sandman bring me a dream
Make him the cutest that I’ve ever seen
Give him two lips like roses and clover
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over

Sandman, I’m so alone
Don’t have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream

Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Make him the cutest that I’ve ever seen
Give him the word that I’m not a rover
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over

Sandman, I’m so alone
Don’t have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream

Bung, bung, bung, bung

Mr. Sandman (Yes?)
Bring us a dream
Give him a pair of eyes with a come-hither gleam
Give him a lonely heart like Pagliacci
And lots of wavy hair like Liberace

Mr Sandman, someone to hold (Someone to hold)
Would be so peachy before we’re too old
So please turn on your magic beam
Mr Sandman, bring us, please, please, please
Mr Sandman, bring us a dream

An exquisite melody!
Thanks for sharing @bxlphabet

I'm glad you like it, @nachomolina. Had you heard this song before?

It's really the first time I've heard this melody,
although his name "Mr. Sandman" became familiar to me
From the beginning!
But it is a great success, I enjoyed it a lot.

Congratulations!
