My Own Lyrics Challenge 1956 - See You Later, Alligator - Robert Guidry

The lyrics of “See You Later, Alligator” popularized a catchphrase already in use at the time. The phase is still in common usage today, showing its longevity.

The song is about a man seeing his sweetheart with another date, and her use of the term is how she rejects him, along with the following "After 'while crocodile."

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1956. Robert Guidry had recorded a version of his song earlier, but it was not a hit.

It took Bill Haley's recording of "See You Later, Alligator" to send the song to the charts, where it stayed for many weeks. Many people think it is his song, even though it is a cover. His version went to number 14 upon release and is listed on the year end Top 100 at number 33.
