My Own Lyrics Challenge 1959 - Charlie Brown - Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller

As the lyricists struggled to create a hit for the popular singing group “The Coasters” a down-trodden character, to be played by band member Dub Jones, came to mind. The song is famous the line he sings in baritone: "Why's everybody always pickin' on me?"

Despite similarities in theme, this song has nothing to do with the comic book character of the same name. The comic was not yet popular at the time the song was written.

"Charlie Brown" has become a part of pop culture, with over 80 cover versions of the song having been recorded since the original.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1959. The Coasters' version of “Charlie Brown” became a hit, and went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts upon release. It was number 17 on the year end Billboard Hot 100.

This video shows The Coasters performing the song on Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show in 1959. Some amazing Charleston dancing goes on in the middle of this short clip.
