My Own Lyrics Challenge 1961 - Stand by Me - Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller

The lyrics for “Stand by Me” are inspired by the spiritual hymn “Lord Stand By Me.” Although the lyrics speak to “Darling,” they retain the religious essence of the original. The theme is that having someone to care about your struggles makes life easier to get though.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1961. “Stand by Me” rose to number 1 on the Billboard chart upon release and was number 67 on the year end Billboard Hot 100.

"Stand by Me" is ranked the 122nd out of Rolling Stones “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” The song has since been recorded into more than 400 other versions by people in many countries and walks of life. It is also noted to be the 4th most performed song of the 20th century, with more than 7 million performances.
