My Own Lyrics Challenge 1963 - Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh (A Letter from Camp) - Allan Sherman

The lyrics of “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh (A Letter from Camp)” are based on and parodies of actual letters Allan Sherman received from his son while at summer camp. The exaggerations are by both of them.

Tragedies and fear were played up by the son, who was later expelled from the camp, and by the father who was amused by what he got in the mail.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1963. “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh (A Letter from Camp)” rose to number 2 on the Billboard chart upon release and was number 71 on the year end Billboard Hot 100.

The song won the 1964 Grammy Award for comedy. It was featured on radio comedy shows for years. It also appeared in films, and was the basis of a book, a board game and a stage play.

Allen Sherman performed the song often on TV shows and set a standard with his portrayals of his son’s despair.
