Mesjid dalam bahasa inggris adalah mosque yaitu salah satu tempat peribadatan bagi kaum muslimin untuk melaksanakan kewajiban sebagai makhluk terhadap khaliknya.
Pada masa peperangan antara Aceh dan Belanda mesjid selain tempat peribadatan juga dipergunakan sebagai tempat mengatur strategi peperangan atau tempat mengatur sesuatu untuk keperluan kesejahteraan umat baik dalam agama maupun dalam tatanan kenegaraan.
Mesjid di Indonesia yang paling banyak terdapat di negeri serambi mekah yaitu Aceh, karena daerah tersebut merupakan fondations agama islam di daerah Indonesia, dan daerah tersebut adalah salah satu daerah yang menganut hukum syariat islam.
