BMKG: Beware, 3.5 Meters Dark Wave Strait

Pangkal Pinang ~ The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Pangkalpinang City issued an early warning related to the potential of sea waves reaching three meters in the Gelasa Strait, on Wednesday (08/08/2018).

"The maximum wave as high as that must be watched out because it can endanger safety," said the precursor of the BMKG Office of the Pangkalpinang Class I Meteorological Station Nenden Wardani in Pangkalpinang.

He also appealed to the community or fishermen to be aware of the maximum wave that could reach 3.0 meters to 3.5 meters in the waters north of Bangka and the Karimata Strait.

The significant wave height in the Bangka Strait crossing is estimated at 0.25 to 0.75 meters, in South Bangka 0.25 to 1.25 meters, in the Gelasa and North Strait of Bangka 0.25 to 1.5 meters, in the Karimata Strait 0, 25 to 1.75 meters.

"Assuming the maximum wave height can reach twice the height of a significant wave, the wave heights in the Gelasa Strait, northern Bangka and Karimata Strait can reach 3.0 to 3.5 meters," he said.

BMKG calls on people to be aware of the potential for lightning clouds (Cumulonimbus clouds) which cause the wave height to increase. Wind speed on the crossing routes of the Bangka Belitung Islands ranges from 4-38 kilometers per hour moving from east to south.

The community must also be aware of the high tide of the sea water in a number of coastal areas that reach two meters or more. The height of the sea tide on the Membalong coast of Belitung Regency is predicted to be 2.38 meters, in Sungailiat Bangka Regency 2.31 meters, in Toboali South Bangka Regency 2.13 meters, and Kelapa Kampit in East Belitung Regency 2.07 meters.

On the coast of Mentok Beach, West Bangka Regency is around 1.80 meters, in Tanjungpandan, Belitung Regency 1.60 meters, and in Belinyu, Bangka Regency is 1.59 meters.

"Therefore we urge residents or tourists to be aware of the high tide of the sea by not doing activities on the coast that are directly connected to the high seas," said Nenden Wardani.

On the mainland, the Bangka Belitung Islands Province on Wednesday is predicted to be cloudy and cloudy with the possibility of local rain and light rain in some areas, especially during the afternoon to evening and early morning.

Wind speeds on land are estimated at 10 to 30 kilometers per hour with temperatures of 21 to 32 degrees Celsius and air humidity of 55 to 95 percent.
