TEHRAN - The French government threatened to impose new sanctions on Iran if it refuses to negotiate its missile program. However, Iran refuses to dictate any country to the right of developing missiles with defensive or defense objectives.
The threat was delivered by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Sunday ahead of his visit to Tehran on Monday (5/3/2018).
"There are ballistic missile programs that can reach several thousand kilometers that are inconsistent with UN Security Council resolutions, and go beyond the only need to maintain Iran's borders," Le Drian said.
"If not addressed, the country will face new sanctions," he went on threateningly.
In a separate statement, Le Drian called on the international community to take action to prevent Iranian missiles from becoming a threat to all regional "actors".
The Paris diplomat said he would raise the issue during a scheduled meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other Iranian senior officials in Tehran.
