The Pomegranate
The pomegranate is thought to have originated from Iran and has been cultivated for a long time. This fruit is famous for its health benefits and has been used for thousands of years to treat various diseases in various places.
In India, meat and seeds are used as a tonic for the heart and throat. In the 1500 BC, pomegranates were used as traditional medicine to remove tapeworms and other parasites.
In many countries, pomegranate is widely used as a symbol of fertility and prosperity. Pomegranates are also mentioned several times in the historical and mythological records of Greece, Israel, Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam

Pomegranate Nutrition Content
The most prominent of the pomegranate is none other than the content of its polyphenols, such as tannins and anthocyanins delphinidin, cyanidin, punikalagin, and pelargonidin glycosides in the flesh. This anthocyanin will generally increase as the fruit ripens.

Consumption of pomegranate in fresh condition is strongly recommended because the pomegranate phenolic content can be decreased by the processing technique and pasteurization.
No less with the flesh, pomegranate skin has three times more polyphenols. These polyphenols include tannins, catechins, galokatekins, and prodelpinidin. Because it can not be eaten directly, pomegranate skin is widely extracted to be a supplement and food preservative.
Pomegranate is also equipped with vitamin C, which amounts to 17% daily requirement per 100 g, vitamin K, E, B complex, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, and other minerals. Pomegranate fiber is quite high and is found in the edible part of the fruit.
Pomegranate seed oil also contains picisic acid, palmiic acid, searat acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid.
The Benefits of Pomegranates for Health
Various studies have been done to determine the potential benefits of pomegranate for health. Here are some of them:

Antioxidants are known to prevent and repair DNA damage that causes cancer. The American Institute of Cancer Research recommends cancer patients to apply a plant-based diet with balanced nutrition as long as they get treatment, and pomegranate may be an alternative.
Small-scale research in 2006 and then tried to add 227 ml of pomegranate juice per day to the diet of male cancer patients. The result, the development and increase the number of cancer cells can be suppressed. Allegedly, elagitanin in the pomegranate can prevent the movement of cancer cells. Blood flow to the tumor also decreases, making it more difficult for cancer cells to obtain nutrients.
Another study published in "International Journal of Oncology" 2008 and then tried to add pomegranate extracts in experimental mice that were inoculated with human prostate cancer cells.
The results showed that the size and density of the tumor vessels decreased significantly. However, further research is needed to determine the effect directly to humans.
- Lowers cholesterol

A 2004 study showed that consumption of 50 ml of pomegranate juice per day for more than 3 years can reduce arterial damage due to cholesterol by almost 50%. Cholesterol buildup can also be suppressed.
In another study in Israel, pomegranate juice also lowers cholesterol levels and prevents plaque formation in both men and rats. The combination of antioxidants, dietary fiber, and other nutrients in the pomegranate is thought to play a role in this benefit. Still needed further observation to know the system works, but related researchers suggested that pomegranate juice is included in the balanced diet everyday.

Pomegranate juice is often investigated to know its relation to heart disease. One recent 2005 study showed that consumption of 238 ml of pomegranate juice per day for more than 3 months can increase blood flow to the heart and lower the risk of heart attack.
Another limited study in hypertensive patients, the consumption of pomegranate juice for 2 weeks showed a decrease in systolic blood pressure. Researchers suspect that tannins and pyicleagents in pomegranates are effective in heart health because they are able to prevent free radical damage.

High enough food fiber in the pomegranate can help smooth and digest the digestive system. Pomegranate juice is widely used as a traditional medicine to treat dysentery and cholera.
While the skin, bark, and leaves used to treat diarrhea and other digestive problems. Pomegranates also have moderate calories so often recommended by nutritionists to be included in weight loss diet.
- Relieves osteoarthritis / arthritis

The anti-inflmation effect in the pomegranate helps to relieve pain in people with atherosclerosis and orthhearthritis. A 2009 study by Case Western Reserve University published in "The Journal of Nutrition" revealed that the antioxidants in pomegranate extracts can decrease the levels of inflammatory compounds called interlinin-1b. Pomegranates also prevent the formation of enzymes that damage the cartilage, connective tissue found in the joint.
This benefit is supported by another study published in the journal "Phytotherapy Research" in 2010. They found that pomegranate juice can prevent damage to chondrocytes in cartilage cells. Inflammatory cells were not found in these chondrocytes.
- Maintaining dental health

Who would have thought pomegranate was potentially maintain your oral health. A study was conducted by Faculty of Medicine of Juazeiro do Norte 2006. The hydroalcohol extract of the pomegranate was used to rinse for 1 minute and compared with distilled water and chlordexidine. Samples were collected from 60 patients before and after gargling and the result, the use of pomegranate extract is very effective in resisting the formation of dental plaque.
Pomegranate extract also has anti-bacterial properties against certain microorganisms that cause mouth problems.
- Pomegranate and diabetes

The Journal of Medicinal Food reports the effects of the consumption of various juices, including pomegranates, apples, cranberries, pineapples, Concord grapes, and black cerry against glycation or the process of binding glucose to protein molecules. As a result, pomegranate extracts that have elagat acid and punicalagin are most effective in inhibiting glycation by up to 98%.
Another study showed that pomegranate seed oil may increase insulin secretion in experimental animals. While study studies in 2013 reported that the pomegranate components can reduce oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation.
Pomegranate juice also has anti-diabetic components such as elagates, errors, oleanolates, punical ions, ualates, and ursolic acids. In addition, pomegranate has the potential to prevent obesity and reduce the risk of heart disease that often complicates diabetes.
- Alzheimer's

Another potential benefit of pomegranate for health. Puncorisagin in pomegranate may inhibit the development and formation of micrologia, inflammation of brain cells in Alzheimer's, according to a study from the University of Huddersfield in 2014.
Researchers are still figuring out the amount of pomegranate needed to create an effective drug. But they suspect that this anti-inflammatory effect is also beneficial for the treatment of Parkinson's and arthritis.
