YOGYA - MALIOBORO is one of the most popular street in Yogya. In addition to being in the heart of the city, Malioboro became fairly known for its accompanying historical story. The existence of Malioboro is also often associated with three sacred places in Yogya namely Mount Merapi, Kraton and South Beach.

In Sanskrit, the word Malioboro means a bouquet of flowers. The word Malioboro also comes from the name of a British colonial named Marlborough who had lived there in 1811 - 1816 AD The establishment of malioboro road coincides with the establishment of Yogyakarta Palace.

Initially Jalan Malioboro arranged as an imaginer axis between the South Coast (Parangkusumo Beach) - Kraton Yogya - Mount Merapi. Malioboro began bustling in the colonial era of 1790 when the Dutch government built Vredeburg fort in 1790 at the southern end of this street.

In addition to building the fort, the Dutch also built Dutch Club in 1822, The Dutch Governors Residence in 1830, Java Bank and Post Office shortly thereafter. After that Malioboro growing rapidly because of trade between the Dutch with traders Tiong Hoa. Year 1887 Malioboro Street is divided into two with the establishment of railway stop which is now named Tugu Yogya Station.

Malioboro Street also has an important role in the struggle for Indonesian independence. On the south side of Jalan Malioboro there has been a fierce battle between the homeland fighters against the Dutch colonial troops who wanted to occupy Yogya. The battle then became known as the General Offensive of March 1, 1949, the success of the red and white troops occupied Yogya for six hours and proved to the world that the Indonesian armed forces remained.

Malioboro continues to grow to this day. By retaining the original concept, Malioboro became the center of Yogya society life. Strategic places such as the Office of the Governor of DIY, DID Parliament Building, Beringharjo Parent Market to the Presidential Palace of Gedung Agung also located in this region.

Local government is now continuing to make improvements to organize Malioboro into a comfortable area to stop off. Beginning in 2016, the government has successfully sterilized parking vehicles from Malioboro and is organizing this area on the east side for pedestrian. Lesehan stalls are still maintained to maintain the characteristic of Malioboro.
