Surabaya's symbol is shark and crocodile. Why these two animals are so special for
the people of East Java? Here's the story.
Once upon a time, there were frequent fights between crocodiles and sura fish (sharks) in the oceans. Fight them
triggered by the seizure of prey. Both animals are equally strong and tough. Despite fighting over and over again,
times, no one wins or loses. Therefore, they try to find
deal.
">quoteHi, Crocodile, I'm tired of fighting like this," said the sura fish. "Me too!" crocodile replied.
"We make it all, for our dominion in two, I have full power
against prey in the water. In the meantime, you completely master prey on land. Watershed
and land is an area reached by sea water when tide, "said sura fish.
"All right, I agree!" replied the alligator.
Since ifu, the two agreed to respect their respective territories, so there was no fighting.
However, one day, sura fish broke the deal. Quietly, he searched for prey in the river.
When knowing cheating sura fish, crocodiles are very angry.
"Hi, Sura! You have broken the agreement we have made together." The river is the region
my power! "cried the crocodile angrily.
"What have I broken? I'm hunting prey in the water!" said the fish sura.
"However, the river lies on land, meaning the river is my realm!
marine waters! "said crocodile.
Both of them then argued and there was a fight. They bite each other.
The surrounding waters become red because of the blood that comes from the wounds of these two wild animals.
Sura fish managed to bite the base of the crocodile tail to the right so crocodile tail becomes crooked
to the left.
Sura and crocodile battle is the inspiration for the creation of the name of the city of Surabaya. There are also
another opinion that the name Surabaya comes from the word "sura" which means survived, and the word "baya"
which means danger. So, if combined can mean safe from danger.
Note from Surabaya folklore: the tale of the origin of Surabaya is the symbol of the city
Surabaya is also taken from the story of the battle of these two animals, namely shark sura and crocodiles.
