Discovering famous street food and Thai sweets in one location! I will have to go back there again several times!

This is my entry for #steemfest-recommend by @coingecko for good food guide in Bangkok. I have recently discovered an amazing little place not far away from the main railway station (Hua Lamphong Station).

Standing outside the number1 exit of the MRT underground station “Hua Lamphong”, glancing to the right to take some photos of my old childhood playground. (My grandmother’s house was in the alley opposite the railway station).

The morning sky is very grey and rather sad. (I wonder why!) Follow those people ahead of us, I think they are going for good food too.

Then, we have to cross the road straight ahead which goes over the small canal. There is a big sign by the corner of the road. Keep walking straight along this extreme right road which leads towards Wat Traimitr. You could probably see the golden spire of this famous temple. This five minutes’ walk will lead us towards the direction of the China Gate at the beginning of Yaowarad Road. We always call this area Yaowarad whereas ‘China Town’ is quite a new imported idea from people who have been to America. But we have to keep looking for a small side street just opposite the white wall of the temple. There is a 7-11 at the corner of Soi Sukon1 (sukon means pigs: so it’s Pig Lane no.1)

The first street food place on the right is famous for the “Crispy Fried Mussels Pancake”. There are also Hainan chicken rice, rice congee, and pork noodles. My suggestion is to go there with an empty stomach as the choices of street food in this Sukon/Pig Street would make eating bing unstoppable.

The crispy fried mussels pancake was just amazingly good. It was not oily but light and crisp with very fresh ingredients. The bean sprouts were lightly cooked and the taste was just heavenly. I should have ordered their special combination of mussels and oysters in omelette on top of the crispy pancake! I promise myself to go back there soon.

Looking up to see Wat Traimitr opposite Soi Sukon1. This temple is well worth a visit if you have at least an hour! The biggest solid gold Buddha statue of 52 tons sits in the highest shrine room.

This stall is right behind my table; these are my favourite Chinese snacks which are filled with chopped vegetables. The long queue told me to come back again with a special food box!

There are at least seven famous street food stalls in this Soi Sukon1. An incredible find as it is quite difficult to find such diverse food within one small street. The next one is Suki stall, which is quick fried vegetables with vicimilli and a choice of seafood, pork or chicken! You could have this Suki as a soup-based Suki. They also have fried rice, spicy minced pork on rice and as-you-like dishes which means vegetarians could have fried mixed vegetables and omelette on rice!

Opposite this red hanging poster is a simple food stall specialising in cheap fast food dish with a wide choice of fried vegetables on the menu; they also have fried noodles with Chinese kale. This stall looks very clean and hygienic.

Keeping to the left side, there’s a famous chicken rice called ‘Pichai Kai Thon’ and an amazing home-made ice-cream place with more than fifty choices. I did have a normal chocolate scoop, the cakes there look very attractive too.

Then, the most famous food here is in the restaurant called ‘Si Morakot’ which means ‘emerald colour’. Many tourists are there for the ‘Rice with red pork and crispy pork’. According to some guide book, one must come here at least once in one’ life! Looking at the full house, many people seem to be taking this advice seriously!

Opposite this Emerald Colour Restaurant is a spicy noodle restaurant which is a favorite among people who like strong flavour noodles with lots of dried chili!

Further down the street, there’s another famous ‘Pork Sate’ place, there are daily phone orders and customers coming by cars to pick up their bags of ‘pork sate’! This is a special kind of grilled pork which has been marinated in spices and curry powder; grilled until cooked and to be eaten with lightly spicy peanut sauce. Very yummy too.

It seemed they have sold out by early afternoon! The big pot of sauce was almost empty.

There seemed to be guided tour for gourmet food that day! Groups of tourists walking around the area. What fun!

After the main course, it’s time for some traditional Thai sweets. This is an amazing choices on offer that one order is not justifiable; two orders seem more logical.

These diced and sliced fruit pieces and other Thai sweets would be eaten with either some syrup or sweet coconut milk with some crushed ice. This cooling sweets are so good after lunch on a warm day.

We are almost at the end of Soi Sukon1 and walking along this narrow street like a loop, the street opens into the main road with Wat Traimitr in view. So, Soi Sukon1 and Sukon2 are connected like a circling loop behind these shop houses. Here there is another well known noodle stall which gets very busy in the evenings.

I could not help having a peek at the bright colour house at the corner. There is so much space inside this house.

Walking toward the red China Gate, you’ll find a wider road with lots of one-way traffic towards Yaowarad road with various street food along both sides.

เราไปเดินเที่ยงหาของกินที่ ถนนสุกรแถวสถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพง เราไปถึงสถานีรถใต้ดิน แล้วออกมาทางออกเบอร์1 ทำให้มองเห็นสถานีรถไฟอยู่ตรงข้าม เราก็เดินชิดขวา ข้ามถนนเดินตรงไปทางวัดไตรมิตร เดินไปเพียงร้อยกว่าเมตร มีร้านเซเว่นทางซ้ายมือ ก็จะเห็นซอยสุกร1 ถ้ามองไปทางขวามือก็เห็นวัดไตรมิตรตั้งตระหง่านอยู่ ที่วัดมีพระพุทธรูปทองคำแท้ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกประทับอยู่บนมณธป ถ้ามีเวลาสักชั่วโมงเราก็น่าจะแวะไปกราบท่านต่อไป

ที่ซอยนี้มีของกินที่มีชื่อเสียงถึงแปดเจ้าที่มีชื่อเสียง มารวมกันโดยไม่ได้นัดหมายกัน ทำให้ที่นี่เป็นสวรรค์ของนักกินที่อยากมีความหลากหลายของทางเลือก และเราสามารถเดินจากซอยสุกร1 ไปจนทะลุออกมาที่ซอยสุกร2 ที่อยู่ถัดไป ทำให้ไม่ต้องเสียเวลาเดินกลับไปกลับมา ร้านที่เราลองแล้วประทับใจมากคือ ร้านแรกที่จะหอยทอดแมลงภู่และหอยนางรมย์ด้วย เจาทำได้ดีมากเพราะกรอบและไม่อมน้ำมัน ของสดแยะเจาไม่ได้ใส่ผงชูรสและน้ำตาล เราต้องกลับไปกินออส่วนแน่นอนในครั้งหน้า

ใกล้ๆกันมีร้านสุกี้ที่ดูดีมาก ต้องข้ามก็มีร้านอาหารตามสั่งที่มีเมนูผัดผักหลายอย่าง รวมราดหน้าด้วย ถัดไปมีร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวโรงหมูที่มีรสจัดเหมือนก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ และข้างๆก็มีร้านข้าวมันไก่ตอนที่มีขื่อมาก เราตามไปกินไอศกรีมทำมือของสองพี่น้อง เห็นมีให้เลือกมากกว่าสามสิบอย่าง มีขนมเค๊กและกาแฟด้วย แต่ที่พลาดไม่ได้ คือร้านสีมรกตที่เก่าแก่มีชื่อมาก คนมากินกันเต็มร้านทั้งไทยและนักท่องเที่ยวฝรั่ง ข้าวหมูแดงและหมูกรอบของเขาดูดีมากๆ แล้วยังมีร้านขายหมูสะเต๊ะถัดไปอีกเล่า ร้านนี้มีแต่ลูกค้าประจำโทรมาสั่ง แล้วรถเก๋งก็มาจอดรับของกัน เขาขายหมดเร็วมาก มีทัวร์ฝรั่งมากินที่ร้านสีมรกตหลายโต๊ะทีเดียว

แล้วยังมีร้านกระเพาะปลาตุ๋นยาจีนอีกด้วย ร้านอาหารแบบนี้จะขายดีในตอนเย็น

ปิดท้ายด้วยร้านขายขนมหวานแบบโบราณ ร้านนี้มีที่นั่งเยอะมาก และมีของให้เลือกมากกว่ายี่สิบอย่าง ทำให้เราต้องกลับไปที่ซอยสุกรอีกหลายครั้งแน่นอน

เราก็เดินต่อจนทะลุไปที่หน้าปากซอยสุกร2 ก็เจอร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวมะนาวที่คนพูดถึงกันมาก ร้านนี้จะแน่นในช่วงเย็น รสชาดแซบแน่ๆ เราก็หวังว่าเพื่อนๆคงมีโอกาสไปเดินเล่นและชิมอาหารที่ซอยสุกรบ้าง
