This is my entry for #fruitandveggies on Monday by @lenasveganliving.

Walking along the old shop-houses further down New Road, not very far from Sathorn Pier in Bangkok; some old ladies were trying to make a living by selling fresh vegetables in front of their houses. This is quite convenient for other residents in this area as these elderly people don’t have to have a long walk to the supermarket. They could buy very small amount of various fruits and vegetables at cheaper prices in their neighbourhood. This is a very nice and old area of Bangkok where Chinese immigrants came to settle in Siam over two hundreds years ago.

There are the occasional fruits on wheels so that even taxi drivers could get some delicious and juicy fruits during the traffic jam! This one is selling jackfruits.

There is even a local lady offering papaya salad at her food stall. Papaya salad or som-tam is traditional northeastern salad made with raw papaya, green string beans, fresh garlic, chili, shallot and dried shrimps; these ingredients are pounded together in an earthen bowl with a little fish sauce, tamarind juice and coconut sugar. This veggie salad is very good for people who want to be on a diet. Or you could eat some bananas to make you feel quite full for hours.

As the weather is very hot and the sun is very strong, why not get a hat at this lady’s stall. People here try their best to make a living without bothering their families. I really have a lot of respect and admiration for these entrepreneurial ladies. I don’t even know how to start such a small business myself!!

Wishing you a very peaceful and happy week.

Cheers.
