Thai photography contest: orchids and lotus. Lotus at the market in Nongkhai, ดอกบัวที่ตลาดในหนองคาย

This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest41 on orchids and lotus. Now that I can use the internet normally, I can post these photos taken at the morning market in Nongkhai last weekend.

The morning market, Pho Chai market, was full of jasmine garlands, yellow marrygold garlands and lotuses. This just told me that the day was a Buddhist holy day. There were red and white lotuses everywhere: some were already folded to show off the layers of petals while some were left with their petals unfolded. These were bundled into small set of three to five lotuses. People would buy two sets to put into two vases by the Buddha statue in their shrine rooms.

Buddhist holy days or Ubosod Days are based on lunar calendar and astrology. They are based on the four major phases of the moon: full moon, half waxing moon, half waning moon and completely dark moon phase. Usually Buddhists would make an effort to go to temples to make offerings and join in the evening chanting with the monks. Older people would go to offer food to monks just before lunchtime. Monks are not allowed to eat after lunchtime, so they have two meals a day. If I could follow this rule, my health would be in good shape!

ตอนนี้เราใช้อินเทอร์เน็ตได้เป็นปกติสุขแล้ว หลังจากมันจากหายไปเป็นระยะมาสามสี่วัน อากาศแปรปรวนมีอิทธิพลต่อคลื่นสื่อสารที่มาตามอากาศ! เราไปถึงตลาดเช้าที่หนองคาย เดินไปก็เห็นดอกบัว ดอกดาวเรือง และพวงมาลัยมะลิมากมาย ทำให้เราเดาได้ว่าต้องเป็นวันพระ หรือวันอุโบสถแน่นอน ชาวบ้านที่นี่ยังถือตามประเพณีเดิมที่เขาต้องไปวัดในวันพระ โดยเฉพาะวันพระใหญ่ ทำให้แม่ค้าขายดอกไม้ยิ้มออก ขายดอกไม้กันอย่างคึกคัก ดอกไม้ที่นี่ราคาถูกมากด้วย โดยมากแม่ค้าจะซื้อจากสวนที่ชาวบ้านปลูกขายอยู่นอกเมือง

ตอนเช้าจะมีชาวบ้านมานั่งคอยตักบาตรถวายอาหารพระ ตั้งแต่ตีห้า พอสายๆหน่อยคนสูงอายุจะไปถวายเพลที่วัดใกล้บ้าน ถ้าไปไหว้พระทีโบสถ์ในวันพระ เราจะเห็นดอกไม้ พวงมาลัยดอกมะลิ ดอกบัวเต็มพื้นที่หน้าพระประธาน เต็มทุกถาดทุกพานวางดอกไม้ แลดูสดชื่นมาก ตอนเย็นพวกขาประจำที่ชอบไปวัด ก็จะไปสวดมนต์ทำวัตรเย็นที่วัดด้วย วันพระใหญ่มีความสำคัญมากสำหรับคนที่หนองคาย เขาจะจัดดอกไม้เป็นพิเศษเพื่อถวายพระพุทธรูปที่บ้าน และที่วัดประจำหมู่บ้าน นี่เป็นประเพณีที่หาดูได้ยากในเมืองหลวง เราก็หวังว่าชาวบ้านและเด็กรุ่นใหม่คงสืบสานประเพณีนี้ต่อไปนานๆ.
