greetings to all my fellow stemmians, I will cover a little bit about how the natural and technological developments and sophistication of today's NASA world are.
Machine learning is a field of computer science that gives the ability to learn something without being programmed explicitly.
The success of NASA researchers is the result of NASA Kepler telescope with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) Google.
This collaboration was the brainchild of two of NASA Sagan's graduate students at the University of Texas, Austin, Christopher Shallue, senior software engineer at Google AI, California, and Andrew Vanderburg, an astronomer.
At first, they both wanted to train computers to be able to distinguish images of dogs and cats.
Then they developed this idea to identify exoplanets (planets outside the Galaxy) from Keple data, based on the change of light as a planet crosses its solar system center.
This newly discovered eighth planet is Kepler-90i, a hot, rocky planet that surrounds a solar-like star called Kepler-90. This planet has been declared unfit for humanity.
Kepler-90 distance from Earth alone about 2,545 light years, precisely in the constellation Draco. Kepler-90i revolves around its star (Kepler-90) every 14.4 days.
"The Kepler-90 star system is like a mini version of our solar system, with a closer distance to each other,"
Kepler-90 is the center of the first solar system that has many planets, like planets in the Milky Way galaxy orbiting the sun.
Initially, NASA researchers found only seven planets orbiting the star. However, Google AI looks back at the archives of data NASA collected via Kepler's telescope and discovered the eighth planet.
Kepler Telescope is a space observatory designed by NASA to search for Earth-like planets that are orbiting at other centers of the solar system and have been launched since 2009.
Since its launch, the Kepler telescope has been observing 150,000 sun-like stars over the years to determine exoplanet candidates, based on the slight dimming of stars caused by potential planet passes.
Google's AI network identifies it by using signals that have been checked and confirmed in the Kepler planet catalog. Nearly 96 percent of the analysis is accurate.
"Machine learning is very sophisticated, and can help as in certain situations when there is a lot of data, but humans can not look for it," Shallue said.
The planet also has an orbit for 14.4 days, but unlike Kepler-90, Kepler-80 is colder and redder than our sun. In addition, all the orbits of planets are very close around.
To date, Kepler has observed 2,525 exoplanets that have been confirmed.
Jessie Dotson, the Kepler project scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center, California, is excited about the cooperation of NASA and AI Google.
"This is a new way to examine the data, it's like early research to apply machine learning algorithms. We promise to continue to make significant progress in our understanding of planetary systems around other stars," Dotson said.
The launch of the mission in 2018, such as the Satellite Survey Transiting Exoplanet (TESS) and the James Webb Space Telescope, will allow further and closer study of the planetary candidate identified by Kepler.
so little information from me regarding new discoveries from NASA about the new development of planet earth and cooperation between NASA and google.
