When an insect flies right in front of its nose or waves off a sugar container in the kitchen, you may not be too fond of the presence of insects. But, like it or not, we live on Earth surrounded by about 10 quintillion (one million trillion) insects, including about 10 quadrillion (a thousand trillion) of ants. "Insects evolved 400 million years ago, when Earth's oxygen levels shrank, so did insects, so they breathed easier and faded faster than their predators," says Katy Prudic, entomologist at the University of Arizona.
