I ended my last post halfway through my trip to the Vietcong tunnels at Chu Chi. I had encountered several traps with my group and the tour guide. We also saw a tank. Afterwards it was time to continue to the adjacent shooting range. Unfortunately I did not make a picture but I will try to describe it. The weapons used in the war were available to shoot with. For me the most interesting one was the M60 heavy machine gun. What an absolute beast. I did however not fire it myself. There were a lot of people in our group that did do it though. And even as a bystander I was shocked by the absolute devastation caused by firing such a weapon.
After visiting the shooting range we encountered a demonstration area of various traps. So basically there were traps available for any kind of size, or ones that work well even in rain or if they are placed in a slope. Any such trap would usually be impossible to get out of yourself. Imagine how terrible it must have been to be stuck in such a trap while a battle is going on in the meanwhile. When I mentioned this to the tour guide he stated that it did not matter, those stuck in a trap we’re almost always fired on......
And here is a typical door trap. The lower part was later invented. So before that soldiers could keep their gun in front of them and catch the trap. With the lower addition however it would swing below the belt so to say and would disable someone in a gruesome manner...
Next time I will share the final pictures where I eventually enter the tunnels myself :)!
