I loved the old phones that used to cost 2 pence to make a call! They were clunky but at least you had privacy. As far as I am aware public phones were not wiretapped/intercepted like mobile phones are now by the security services.

really what you say, one of the greatness of the telephone of the era can not be tapped. now the world of communication increasingly sophisticated, confidentiality can not be maintained properly.
