Superb Fairy Wrens.

This is my entry for this week's Feathered Friday challenge organized by @keithboone

I’m always excited to come across Superb Fairy Wrens as they are such beautiful little birds……especially the males. They are energetic and hard to capture, so I was pleased to get a couple of shots of this female, Superb Fairy Wren.

The males vibrant blue and black plumage is very eye catching and these colours stand out even more against their grey/white belly feathers. The females and young fairy wrens are mostly brown.

It is easy to distinguish the females from the young birds as they have an attractive green tinge to their feathers.

Superb Fairy Wrens are found mainly south of the Tropic of Capricorn in Australia, along the eastern coastal areas, in Tasmania and in the south east corner of Australia.

They love urban parks and gardens and enjoy dense cover and low shrubs. Superb Fairy Wrens are often seen in small groups which generally consist of one male, several females and a few young birds.

Their diet includes insects and other small arthropods and are mainly sourced form the ground or low bushes. Their nests are dome shaped structures made up of grasses and other fine materials.

The females are responsible for building the nests and incubating the eggs but both sexes take part in feeding their young. Due to the sociable nature of these birds, other members of their group will assist with feeding the young birds as well.

We have some wrens here, but not like those. I wonder how they got their "fairy" name...

Many of our "spring" birds have returned and seem blissfully unaware of the foot of snow we're supposed to get tomorrow.

I'm not sure how they got their name buy they certainly are very cute. Your spring birds will no doubt have amazing survival instincts and will know what to do to avoid getting too cold. A cosy, feathered lined nest snuggled up to another bird sounds good to me. 😊

So true @janton, the male species of the animal kingdom cannot be ignored. They demand attention and they get it. I have a good trigger finger and I am quick off the mark. I could have got a job with Butch and Sundance. lol.
