SIX OF THE BEST

I fondly remember back to my school days even with all the punishments we had to endure. Thw younger generation has no idea what evil treatment they dodged. It did me no harm as I am still here and I had some pretty tough bum cheeks at one stage.I wasn't nurtured and loved through school, but more like beaten through and I needed it.

I think it probably did me some good as the threat of a beating probably got me through school. I was one of those students that arrived at school and worried about homework only then. If your class was before the break time you were screwed and guaranteed to be punished someway or other. When I got home in the evenings normally after 7pm (sport normally finished at 5.30 pm) i was too tired for homework.

The one teacher specialised in bacon slices. These were ok and not that bad really. It involved a metal ruler used on it's side coming down in slashing method on your backside. First one was always more painful than the others but quick and easy. He moved on to donkey bites when he realised we didn't really care. This was involved spitting into a cupped hand and hitting our thighs as hard as possible. It left bruises ,but wasn't that painful either. That was junior school by the way so it was a learning curve for what lay in store.

High school was a little more serious as the wood work teacher made specailist hitting sticks for the teachers. New designs and experiments were always happening. A full on research and development department to beat the kids. Doesn't sound great thinking about it ,but that was what was going on.

We were so used to getting beaten that detention was introduced on Friday afternoons. We hated that and would rather be beg to be beaten. This is until we realised who would take detention and had no care whether we stayed or left. Most of us used to climb out the back window after roll call and that was detention done.

I think the head master used to get tired of beating us as and was happy to see us matriculate. I am happy to see the mind set change though as kids getting beaten daily is not great. When I left I think I had an extra layer of skin over my backside from the hundreds of beatings I received. It did me good though and a few of my friends. An all boys school was not a place for the light hearted in those days and we had no snowflake rooms.

I enjoy reflecting on things and my memories are not bad as the good ones will always outweigh the bad ones.

My time in school didn't involve beatings of any sort. It was already phased out in America by this point.

I received a special kind of close fist hitting pressure points kind of beatings, with a nice sauce of mental torture added to the mix.

The way I see it, aside from a bit of PTSD as residual, it molded my character in a way I see as good. As the psycho who beat me was also my father, and did actually have some pretty sound morals.

I choose to not lay hands on my children. I am kind to them, and when they are misbehaving, the bass in my voice is usually enough to assist them in correcting their behavior, when it isn't I just start taking toys away, and this is always productive for correcting behavior. They key is, not to take the toy away for a day or two, but rather, a month or two, so they can really have time to think about consequence.

I do adhere somewhat to the saying "spare the rod, spoil the child", but this isn't so literal in the way I view it. There are different ways of disciplining that are just as effective, without leaving mental scars. There are cases I would lay a whooping down on one of my kids, but that would entail something like stealing and vandalism. Those are things I am strongly against, and God forbid they behave this way, I'm sure it will be the last time they do.

I just try to raise my kids with love and compassion.

I received a few back handers off my teacher but his days were numbered and it was being phased out at that stage. If I told my parents they probably would of called the cops but it didn't do me any harm. But thinking of a teacher to hit a young child is a bit strange and looking at him now I think he was a bit fucked up in the head. If anyone hit my child in school I would go in and rip his head off!

wow sir cryptoandcoffee! haha! What kind of dang school was that anyway? Amazing.

Hi Janton. One of the traditional all boy schools. Don't tell me you made it through without something at least.

howdy today sir cryptoandcoffee! Where was this, South Africa? I've never heard of such punishment actually. In our school growing up they did use a board for serious infractions but I never got into trouble once and was never sent to the Principle's office once. I guess I was the perfect student. No wonder the teachers loved me! lol.

I suppose the rednecks stood out more making you look like an angel. We had a board as well but it was easier to just get caned and not worry about such issues. If you were going to be expelled they would be called in.

sir cryptoandcoffee.....oh man that sounds painful! Getting caned..that's a major criminal punishment in some places isn't it? And you guys got it everyday! lol. No wonder your backside was tough, it had to be like Rhino skin by the time you graduated!

It was common practice in those days and like most things have all but fallen away today.

yes sir cryptoandcoffee and some things are best to have fallen away. Is that how you feel about the constant beatings or do you have mixed feelings about it? Your rear didn't have feelings but the time you got out of there!

I think it did me more good than harm. It helped me get through in a sick sought of way. Some kids need it. Bit like the army. Discipline is good for a young lad.
