Three Arches Rocks National Wildlife Refuge

in esteemapp •  6 years ago

Three Arches Rocks is a national wildlife refuge just of the coast of Oceanside, Oregon and just a mile or two from where I am staying right now.

In 1907 President Roosevelt declared Three Arch Rocks a National Wildlife Refuge. Today, it protects over a quarter million nesting seabirds and is a favorite haulout site for marine mammals. It is the oldest National Wildlife Refuge west of the Mississippi River. I had no idea!

The land totals 15 acres and the rocks provide habitat for Oregon's largest breeding colony of tufted puffins. The puffins with their large bright orange beaks and long yellow head tufts are one of the most recognizable seabirds on the Oregon coast.

I definitely did not take this next picture but it is awesome!

I did take this picture of the town of Oceanside. The rocks are behind me to my left.

And just because, here is a picture of my dad taking a picture of the deer that were outside our front door this morning.

I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Those look awesome. In that top pic it looks like you can drive on the beach. Is that allowed there? Can you camp there?

That top one is taken from the balcony of the house I'm in. Driving on the beach is legal in Oregon, I believe. Also the whole of the Oregon coast is public! No private ownership of beaches is allowed. I don't believe you can just camp anywhere but there are some sweet state parks on the coast. I have stayed many tune at cape lookout state park just down the road from me.

Nice. We only have one beach, I'm aware of here, that you can drive on. I never did visit the coast when I worked out there. I'll have to make it back out that way someday. Thanks for sharing these pics. See you on discord.

Sooooo pretty.

That was this morning from the balcony. It was great.

That last photo is like Inception. 😄

Beautiful spot! I had no idea Oregon has puffins!

Yep, it's mostly retired Seattle puffins that don't want to deal with all the traffic anymore! :)

😝

Wow, imagine living in one of those homes on the hill and having that view every morning with your coffee... I could get used to that.
