Is DDos possible on Ethereum Network?

in ethereum •  7 years ago

DDoS is a distributed denial of service attack which typically means having a bunch of bots making a massive amount of requests to servers in order to bog them down and make them unresponsive to authentic requests. It's a way of targeting and bringing down a website or online service.

I don't know why some people here keep implying that DDoS attacks can't happen to a blockchain. It's the same basic principle -- the network is flooded with transactions in an attempt to fill up blocks and make it difficult for people to transact.

The difference is that DDoS on the blockchain is economically expensive b/c of transactions fees. That's one of the attractive features of crypto because on the regular internet a server responds to your request for free whereas the blockchain requires you to pay a price. That's one reason to be excited about Swarm for Ethereum -- built in DDoS protection would be feckin' huge.

At any rate, while this disincentivizes DDoS that by no means guarantees that it can't happen.

These txns are all for a gas price of 1 GWei so I'm not sure how much of an "attack" this really is considering normal transactions have a gas price well above that and will be prioritized. I just sent a transaction with no problems so...not sure what the deal is with all of these little txns.
