This article is not written with the intention of claiming that Bitcoin or Ethereum is better, it is written to get you to think about value, and what brings value to a currency.
With over 1000 cryptocurrencies currently in existence, and a new one coming out every few days it can be easy to get caught up in the hype. The reality is that many of these cryptocurrencies will fail in the future when they either get lost in the crowd of thousands of others, or people realize that they offer nothing unique. What creates real value for a cryptocurrencies is not necessarily the technology, but the people that use it, how it makes their lives easier, and what they stand to gain from it. Bitcoin was designed to be a safer and less corruptible form of currency than fiat (paper) money, and to protect people from large scale stock market crashes. It has grown significantly since its release, but is mainly used by common people. It is currently being accepted by less than 1% of businesses worldwide, but make financial transactions much cheaper and much faster. It is a decentralized currency that does not experience inflation, but it is not immune to challenges such as the ability to scale and competition from other cryptocurrencies.
Ethereum is more valuable to business than it is to people. It is a platform, and not just a form of money. Ethereum offers smart contracts that can help to save its big business customers billions of dollars by eliminating the need for middle parties such as lawyers. The Ethereum Enterprise Alliance features some of the worlds top companies such as JP Morgan, UBS and Microsoft, meaning that this is endorsed by a powerful business community. Even if a better technology with more features comes along, the community itself will be what brings value to the currency. A great example is that of Dash and PivX. Many people do not know that the creators of Dash left to create Pivx which has many stronger features than Dash. However the value of Pivx is a fraction of Dash as it simply lacks the community.
