Ethereum is a cryptocurrency somewhat similar to Bitcoin, but with much more function and usability. Ethereum was created with the ability for crypto users and developers to easily make their own token that runs on the Ethereum network and most of the ICOs that you see today are built on the Ethereum Blockchain. Every ERC20 token runs on Ethereum.
The implementation of smart contracts is what really sets Ethereum apart and allows for unique coding to be built into the network to carry out a desired task. While this description is very broad, so is the scope of the abilities that smart contracts are bringing to the table when it comes to coins. You can build in automatic profit sharing, coin staking, and so much more with a smart contract and we have only seen the tip of the iceberg so far.
