LAUNCH

Ethereum is an open-source, public, blockchain-based distributed computing platform featuring smart contract (scripting) functionality. Ethereum was proposed in late 2013 by Vitalik Buterin, a cryptocurrency researcher and programmer. The system went live on 30 July 2015, with 11.9 million coins.

NAME

If you ever asked yourself where the name Ethereum comes from and why they decided to name this project like this. Here is the answer from the main man himself: Vitalik Buterin

ROAD TO #1 IN MARKET CAP?

Some time passed now, but we had a time where Ethereum was missing only a few percentage points to Bitcoin. On June 13th 2017 Bitcoin had a 39.5% share of the market whereas Ethereum had 33.4%.
Do you think Ethereum will ever get this close again or even outperform in long term, let us know in the comments 😊

RICH FOUNDER BUT STILL WILLING TO IMPROVE HIS PROJECT?

The co-founder of Ethereum and college dropout Vitalik Buterin is not even half the age of Ripple founder Larsen. The 23 year old Canadian-Russian programmer announced in February 2016 that he has about 630,000 Ethers. He is said to have sold a quarter of this in April 2017 for around $ 50 a piece. Extrapolated, he comes at a current market value on a theoretical asset of nearly one billion US dollars. So this is quite a stack of money, but Vitalik is a down to earth guy and we hope he will still do some years of work for the community.

SOLIDITY

To create contracts for voting, crowdfunding, blind auctions and multi-signature wallets you need to learn a programming language called Solidity, which was generally structured by Cavin Wood in August 2014 and since then worked on by the Ethereum foundation. Here is a link for you, if you are interested in learning Solidity

SECOND BEST ICO EVER

Ethereum is one of the best ICOS ever according ROI, but also has since grown into one of the largest blockchain projects in the market. The Ethereum project had its initial coin offering in the summer of 2014, where it sold 11.9 million Ether tokens to raise $16 million. Ether’s issue price at the time of the crowdsale amounted to 0.311$, which is nothing contrasted to 1100$ we see today. The estimated return on investment on condition that you hodled all the years is 340,000.00%. Only NXT is the ICO with a better ROI with astonishing 5,266,900.00%.

BIGGEST TOKEN ON ETHEREUM BLOCKCHAIN IS THE BLOCKCHAIN'S KILLER?

There is a total of 26655 Erc20 Token Contracts. The biggest token according MarketCap is EOS although the token is often called the Ethereum killer. The absurd thing is that the biggest token on the Ethereum platform is an ICO that wants to create a competitive blockchain technology. We need to wait until the EOS platform will launch and how it will be able to compete with the big ecosystem of Ethereum.

CRYPTOKITTIES

CryptoKitties are collectible and breedable digital cats. It’s the world’s first game built on the Ethereum network. When two CryptoKitties breed, their offspring’s appearance and cattributes are determined by each parent’s 256-bit genome and an element of chance, leading to 4-billion possible genetic variations.

FAST GROWING BLOCKCHAIN

Looking at the unique address growth we can see that today (January 27, 2018) 167,149 new addresses were generated. Now we have a total amount of 24,000,000 Ethereum addresses. If we compare this with the numbers from last year the immense growth will become clearer. In January 2017 we broke the 1,000,000 address-mark and we had around 2500 new every day. Sounds big but is nothing compared to what we gain today.

I have one follow up question: How do you measure the number of accounts? I have once for fun generated my own by choosing a random private key. Works. I thin a more accurate number would be to measure the accounts which have has a transaction.

Ye well we took the numbers from https://etherscan.io/chart/address. But it is a good point to measure the accounts with transactions to get a accurate number. But the only numbers we can rely on are from this site. Thanks for your comment :)

Very nice article, with a few things I didn't know yet.

I think ETH is superior to BTC in more than just one way, so I do think it'll be bigger than BTC some time.
If it will be the biggest krypto asset then...well, that's completely different question again, as there are younger currencies that are even more advanced ;-)

thanks for your great comment. In my opinion ETH will surpress BTC at the end of Q1 2018. Ethereum is compared to BTC in many aspects better. I think that many people will recognize this fact.

Nice article I enjoyed reading it. I never heard about CryptoKitties it looks fun.

I didn't know it either, till i did research for this blog. Thanks for steem by on our blog.
