Experimental is a blockchain project aiming at creating a community of like minded, creative people. While this may seem a bit vague, there is a lot of "flesh" beyond this claim (something that you can't say about many blockchain projects today).
First of all, the team behind this is made of veterans who went through the whole process of bootstrapping, maintaining and then selling a company (a thing that I also been fortunate enough to experiment, a while ago). Second, they don't have a "get rich quick approach". On the contrary, they say they will go slow, but steady. Third, they are doing it with an experiment-based approach. Meaning there is no "make it or break it" big idea that may fail dramatically, but many small experiments.
And fourth - probably the thing I liked the most, and the "trigger" that made me be a part of this - is a selective approach for bakers. The pre-sale is having only 300 people behind it and it will stop after the number of people is reached, not after a certain market cap is reached. And each of these backers will actually be part of the community, so there is even a screening process, in which you have to show some (verifiable) skills.
The first experiment is a game backed with cryptocurrency. It's called "CryptoWars" and we expect the white paper in about a week, according to the roadmap published on the experimental page..
What follows is an interview with the Business Lead of Exprimental, Matias Nisenson:
1. You already started, grew and sold a startup. Why trying blockchain this time?
We’ve been following and playing around with blockchain since 2011 - it was really just a matter of time. When Tiempy, our last company, was sold to a European competitor we decided to take the leap and contribute to the blockchain community, which at the end is contributing to a fairer future for everyone. Experimental is not only about gaming, Experimental wants to put the blockchain technology in the hands of the people, everyone should be able to benefit from this revolution.
2. Why do you think gaming on blockchain is big? How do you see it differently from the "regular" gaming, where the entry point is very high, almost inaccessible for an indie studio?
We think Crypto-gaming will be huge because it gives players true ownership over the product. They will own what they payed or invested so many hours for. Everything you build within our soon-to-be released game will be yours, so if you want to sell it or transfer it to a friend, you can do that. You want to sell your tokens? You can do that, you can also convert them into actual money. How great is that?
3. What do you think it's the biggest hurdle you'll have to overcome in launching the project?
There are technical and business challenges involved in launching a game based on the Ethereum protocol. Technically speaking, a strategy game requires fast processing which at this time is not blockchain’s best attribute, it also requires really cheap transactions so playing is not a financial burden to the players and cost prohibitive. We are confident that we will be able to work through both challenges to make CryptoWars a success.
4. What do you think it's your USP (not like in Unique Selling Point, but more like in Unique Skill Pool)?
I have to say our team is definitely the company’s best asset. We have been working together for 8 years now, experimenting together on almost every existing technology. During this time, we all learnt what we know by doing and not by getting formal education in any school or university. Experimental is nothing more than the company’s and team’s culture formalized into a playground of the future, a community in which 300 like-minded people can suggest, share and analyze ideas for blockchain-based projects that have the potential to change the world for good.
5. You just met me at a tech conference (not necessarily fntech) and you want me to invest in your startup. How would you pitch me?
I wouldn’t have to pitch. People pitch when they need to attract someone. We received an insane amount of applications for our pre-sale and we’re only taking in people that can help us make a difference. We are looking for 300 people who motivated, ready to get involved and will help us make our vision a reality. We spend time talking and getting to know each individual. Our goal is not to raise millions now, and we will not proceed to an ICO without a product. These 300 folks have to be blockchain-savvy, understand why this company can succeed and most importantly add value to our community (other than the ETH they contribute).

Disclaimer: I'm one of the first 300 backers on Experimental, hence I have a stake in this project. Also, this makes me feel like one of the 300 guys from Sparta, the movie. Let's hope, though, that we won't have the same destiny, and this time, "the blockchained Sparta" will prevail.

Will be interesting to see how this turns out. A lot of the initial value will be purely speculation but a good team goes a long way
