As I already wrote in the previous article, there was a problem with Binance earlier today, which made the exchange stop all withdrawals.
Apparently, only people using API keys were compromised, but the story is still developing. I'm sure we will know what happened really soon.
But the topic of this article is different. Piggy-backing on the attention spurred by this incident, a new form of scam, which was lately spreading a lot on Twitter, is gaining traction.
Here's how it looks:
If you didn't notice what happened here, I'm going to post the image again, with a few highlights:
As you can see, the second account is not actually the Binance CEO account, it's something called @GunzRebecca
but uses the same avatar photo and same user name as the original.
It also uses different fonts - to mislead automatic Twitter scam content filters - and it's followed by a series of tweets from "happy giveaway customers" who are using the same font mix.
Basic security rules:
- always follow only verified accounts no matter what they are called. They have to have that blue checkmark near the nickname.
- there is no giveaway, people, you will never get your crypto back if you send it to some anonymous guy on Twitter.
- stay safe and get your crypto only through verified processes: buying / selling on exchanges, mining, staking or posting on Steemit. Be very, very cautious when you see "faucets" or "giveaways" where you are required to first send some coins.
I'm a serial entrepreneur, blogger and ultrarunner. You can find me mainly on my blog at Dragos Roua where I write about productivity, business, relationships and running. Here on Steemit you may stay updated by following me @dragosroua.
Wanna know when you're getting paid?
I know the feeling. That's why I created steem.supply, an easy to use and accurate tool for calculating your Steemit rewards | |
Thanks for sharing this alert, well done man!

This is the high point of this post. Scanners are everywhere hunting for careless and unsuspecting users. If it is too good to be true, it is likely not true.

There was the same type of scam used (also on Twitter) about two weeks ago I think.
Instead of the owner of Binance, they impersonated Elon Musk then.
The scam was identical regarding the "giveaway", ETH and amounts.
The scammers just use a viral situation, knowing people will be highly interested to follow certain events or people right then, and won't pay attention to details (like who is really the Twitter account sending the tweets).

Wow, that's really clever and daring. That's one of the reasons the internet is weird. You wouldn't actually stand in front of someone's shop and scam people. You could get beat up. Online though, anything is fair game.
