Scam Alert Related To Recent Binance Incident

in ethereum •  7 years ago

As I already wrote in the previous article, there was a problem with Binance earlier today, which made the exchange stop all withdrawals.

Apparently, only people using API keys were compromised, but the story is still developing. I'm sure we will know what happened really soon.

But the topic of this article is different. Piggy-backing on the attention spurred by this incident, a new form of scam, which was lately spreading a lot on Twitter, is gaining traction.

Here's how it looks:

If you didn't notice what happened here, I'm going to post the image again, with a few highlights:

As you can see, the second account is not actually the Binance CEO account, it's something called @GunzRebecca but uses the same avatar photo and same user name as the original.

It also uses different fonts - to mislead automatic Twitter scam content filters - and it's followed by a series of tweets from "happy giveaway customers" who are using the same font mix.

Basic security rules:

  • always follow only verified accounts no matter what they are called. They have to have that blue checkmark near the nickname.
  • there is no giveaway, people, you will never get your crypto back if you send it to some anonymous guy on Twitter.
  • stay safe and get your crypto only through verified processes: buying / selling on exchanges, mining, staking or posting on Steemit. Be very, very cautious when you see "faucets" or "giveaways" where you are required to first send some coins.
