The Ethereum team plans to introduce shading by 2020

In an interview with TechCrunch, Ethereum developers, including Justin Drake and Vitalik Butterin, talked about a future solution for scaling the etherium.
Buterin recalled that taxes on transactions in Ethereum largely depend on demand and supply:

A lot of people send transactions and want these transactions to get into the blockroom. Blokchan is quite popular, and people are interested in using it, so there is competition for places for transactions in blocks.
Vitalik Buterin acknowledged that if the developers started the project anew, they realized a lot of functions that could initially eliminate the scaling problem. In the current situation, when the etherium became a large and active platform, the solution turned out to be "fundamentally complex".
Justin Drake noted two priorities for the Ethereum team: the Casper protocol, which should translate the airwaves from the PoW consensus to PoS, and shadding, which will allow the unit to work smoothly with a large number of users and transactions.
System updates were created separately. Also, the developers did not plan to implement Casper and sharding together. According to Drake, now improvements are combined into one structure:
Sharding allows you to work with sections of the block that will exist as parallel universes. For communication between them, the so-called cross-references or checkpoints will be used.
In this case, the integration of the Casper protocol together with the shading will "strengthen" the checkpoints and create a more secure and scalable system.
The developers call the upcoming update Ethereum 2.0 - this is an ambitious project, which is likely to be implemented for several years. By 2019 the team plans to launch Casper, after which the system will be ready to implement the shading. The process will take place in two phases, which should be completed by 2020.
