What is OpenSea?
OpenSea is a decentralized marketplace for crypto assets, which include collectibles, gaming items, and other digital goods that are backed by a blockchain like Ethereum. On OpenSea, you can buy or sell any of these items through a smart contract, meaning that no central authority ever holds custody of your items
There are over 500,000 items listed in the OpenSea marketplace and over 100,000 auctions at the moment.
OpenSea has been in private beta for a month, but in just that short time has seen over $400,000 in transactions, making this the first and largest marketplace for crypto assets.
Crypto collectable assets take can be bought or sold on OpenSea so far are:
Getting Started
What do I need to use OpenSea?
If you're on a desktop computer, you'll need to install MetaMask in your browser in order to use OpenSea. You'll also need to fund your account with Ether in order to purchase an item on OpenSea.
On your mobile device, you'll need to use an Ethereum-compatible mobile browser like Toshi or Cipher
How do I list an item?
In order to list an item, you'll need to go to the item on your account page. On the item detail page, click "Sell". This will walk you through the steps for selling an item. Note that you will need to approve both Metamask transactions. The first will allow our sales contract to access your item and the second will initiate the auction.
How does the auction work?
When you list an item for auction, you specify a start price, end price, and duration. At any point, someone can buy your item at the current price. The current price starts at the start price and gradually decrease (or increase) over the auction duration until reaching the end price. After the specified duration, the current price will stabilize at the end price. The auction will remain open after the duration, meaning people can still buy your item. Only when you cancel the auction will the item be returned to your account and removed from auction.
What is Important for users of these games is the ability to buy and sell items directly from each other, and the blockchain unlocks the ability for games to tap into a shared liquidity pool for in-game items. OpenSea has been the frontend of that liquidity pool so far this year. But crypto assets extend to more than just games.
Digital artists are now wanting to tokenizing their art now that blockchain gives them the ability, and OpenSea will be in a great postion to offer them a platform to sell their new Digital art.
Also with other digital asset classes (like tickets and domain names) moving onto the blockchain so that anyone can trade them anywhere, OPenSea will for sure be one of the place you will want to check out.
Devin and Alex are the names of the guys behind this great project with previous experience at Palantir, Pinterest and Credit Karma, and had separate consumer startups that got acquired before they decided to team up and solve problems with digital ownership.
Come meet the developers on Discord or go straight to the OpenSea website and start trading today.
