Dark DAO Dick

in ethereum •  8 years ago

I'm kind of pissed off at the person who stole the ether from the DAO. I've begun calling him/her the Dark DAO Dick. "Dark DAO" because the Dark DAO is the name given to the child DAO that was created when this person split off into his ill-fated piece software hideaway, and "Dick" because whoever did this is a dick.

I'm working on a piece of software called EthSlurp (http://ethslurp.com) which allows me to download and process Ethereum transactions from any given smart contract address. I've been posting the transactions from The DAO since it's inception here: http://www.daodeepdive.com/data.html.

I want to ask anyone who's interested to help me try to figure out anything they can about the Dark DAO Dick. I think, but obviously have no way to know, that there must be some data somewhere in the nearly 135,000 DAO transactions that can help us identify the person who stole the money. Can we trace back the ether through a series of transactions to some known address? Perhaps the thief made a simple mistake. Perhaps they've previously posted an Ethereum address somewhere on the web.

I've made what I think is at least some small progress in that I think I've identified where the Dark DAO Dick lives. See this medium blog post: https://medium.com/@tjayrush/a-clue-about-the-dao-attackers-location-912b9ff29f66#.p0hxzamzr.

Download my data. Help me try to find out more about this thief. I'm willing to try to chase him/her down until we find them.

A thing I think most IT people, programmers, and people of other disciplines are familiar with is Murphy's Law.

"What can go wrong, will go wrong"

So we must always prepare contingencies for when things go wrong. We can't avoid risk and live in a bubble, but we must prepare for when things like Dark DAO Dick happen.

But Murphy's Law applies to the Dark DAO Dick as well. Maybe he/she made a mistake. That's my hope.

I'm with you. We all make mistakes.
