Morning Smoothies ~ The Juicy Truth!

in ethnobotany •  6 years ago

So this has now officially become my morning routine.

For the past three weeks I have been dragging myself outside to harvest some fresh special greens in order to make smoothies, which I then drink together with my diabetic dad (for moral support). And WOW - the results has been amazing.

My father I might add is still very old-school, and although he doesn't mind trying new things - he would hardly attempt something like this out of his own accord, but as long as I help him along on a healthier path - he is willing to try.

The main or base ingredients of this smoothie is moringa leaf, spekboom, spinach, chives and celery; all freshly picked from the garden. (This morning, I did not have any celery ready and I made do without)

All of the base ingredients are specifically chosen for their medicinal and nutritional value, but drinking only that combination every day could become a bit hard to swallow - so I add a different selection of fresh garden greens every morning, depending on what is ready to harvest.

For this morning I added some cucumber, sweet red pepper and green beans.

The only store bought item in this concoction was a green apple (apple trees do not grow well here) but they are great for the body and breaks down the earthy pallet of the smoothie a bit. Sometimes I would add plums or other healthy fruit in stead.

The results:

As a stated above the progress thus far has been fabulous!

Over the past three weeks, my dad has lost 6kg (that is 13.23 pounds) enough to get him complaining that his pants are falling off - but I figure that is not the worst thing to complain about, right?

Also his blood sugar levels have been a lot more stable, plus the hectic headaches that he had been getting has completely vanished, so he went from taking +- 6 painkillers a day for that to taking none.

And the best part is he strangely likes the taste of his morning smoothies!

For me it is an acquired taste, but if nothing else it is a refreshing taste.

That's really cool! Sounds good too. Nice of you to help dad along a healthier path as well.
