EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological satellite agency. Its role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This information is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's Member and Cooperating States in Europe, as well as other users worldwide.

EUMETSAT also operates several Copernicus missions on behalf of the European Union and provide data services to the Copernicus marine and atmospheric services and their users.

As an intergovernmental European Organisation, EUMETSAT has 30 Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.)

EUMETSAT is now inviting well qualified candidates from its Member States to apply for the following post:

  • POST: Communications and Events Assistant
  • LOCATION: Darmstadt, Germany
  • DURATION OF INITIAL CONTRACT: The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
  • This vacancy is subject to approval in the 2018 EUMETSAT Budget and therefore may be filled no sooner than 1 January 2018.
  • BACKGROUND: Within the Strategy, Communication and International Relations Division (SCIR), the Communication and Events Assistant will be responsible for supporting press and media liaison, including organisation of press events, visitor group coordination and support of other EUMETSAT events with partner organisations or on behalf of the EU Copernicus programme. The position will report to the Manager Communications and Outreach.
  • DUTIES: The main duties of the post will be as follows:
    1. Support media relations activities including handling media queries, coordination of filming activities, interviews, organisation of press events/briefings and follow-up reporting.
    2. Provide organisational support for EUMETSAT events.
    3. Manage visitor groups to EUMETSAT, including coordination with the City of Darmstadt for the local visitor programme.
    4. Management and distribution of promotional items.
    5. Develop and run promotional activities for EUMETSAT’s Learning Zone youth education website.
    6. Provide support for the development of online education/outreach activities e.g. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS), hackathon and other events using web technologies.
    7. Support web and social media outreach activities.
    8. Devising and coordinating photo opportunities.
    9. Provision of support to the Communication and Outreach Manager and all other duties as required by the organisation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A full secondary education and at least five years of relevant experience.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Relevant experience working with the media, preferably in a scientific or technical and international environment.
  • Proven experience of independently running projects, with attention to detail, documentation and accuracy, and the ability to perform multiple parallel tasks.
  • Ability to work in a team, but also independently against set targets.
  • Diplomacy and strong interpersonal skills to interact with a range of interfaces, from journalists to senior management and partner institutions.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, good knowledge of German and French would be an advantage.
  • Computer literate with good knowledge of MS Office applications (particularly Word, Excel & Power Point and Outlook).
  • Relevant experience using web/social media for outreach activities.
  • Strong planning skills in combination with anticipation and flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French and/or German.
