Winston Churchill once said - "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."
Perhaps, for the European Union, it is not the "end of the beginning", but the beginning of the end. The existential crisis the Union now faces with Italy is going to end badly, and may even spell the end for the bloc itself.
Yesterday, another powerful man voiced words which will become immortalised in history when he said - "with Italy, you have bitten off more than you can chew". Mr Nigel Farage, while an incredibly polarising figure, has often made strikingly accurate predictions on the future of the EU. This time is no different. Brexit was a major blow for the EU, but what is to come from Italy in the coming months will damage the bloc beyond repair. Mark my words - this is the end.
When the Right Wing Coalition with Lega at the helm, and Five Star Movement swept the board in March, I remember thinking to myself - "this is major stuff". But this week with the actions of the Italian President, I now foresee the European Parliament in Brussels collapsing, just as the Tower of Babel did in a similar fashion before it.
If Italy was to leave the Euro, which I think it will, the consequences not only politically, but also economically, will be disastrous for Europe. As a life long Euro-Skeptic I was excited by the Italian elections - now I am slightly worried. The only thing left to do now is hope for the best.
The European Union has officially bitten off more than it can chew. It has picked the wrong people to bully!
This is the calm before storm.
