I've seen this sentiment making the rounds again, and it makes 3 wrong assumptions.

  1. It assumes that EVs aren't more environmentally friendly than gas cars over the life of the vehicle if they're not utilizing exclusively solar and wind for energy. This clearly isn't the case. Where I used to live, the grid was primarily fueled by burning coal, and where I live now, it's primarily NG. In both areas, my car was still more environmentally friendly than ICEs. Of course there's environmental considerations with mining materials for batteries and the grid isn't zero carbon anywhere, and nobody worth listening to us claiming that. But to say overall they ain't better is just silly sauce.

  2. That solar/wind are the most environmentally sound options. They're not, at least not overall. In some geographical regions, there's efficiency worth noting in hydro, solar is more efficient in some areas that are hot, windmills where it's windy... but best bang for buck as a general rule? Nuclear is the very best for the environment overall.

  3. That EV owners are all climate alarmists. If it turned out my car was worse for the environment, I'd still prefer it. I'm not alone by a longshot. A new study comes out tomorrow that says "Model 3s are 3X worse for the climate than ICE cars", I ain't getting rid of it, and will still buy another because it's a great car for my needs. I ain't make believing shit... I'm just driving a vehicle I like and I don't care at all if you drive an SUV or hate Teslas. It really don't offend me. I'm not a damn evangelist... people like what they like and you do you. People who hate on Teslas because they think they're driven by self righteous hippies are ridiculous.
