A hungry python usually stalks its prey at night and with fast forward movements, its head slightly elevated and tongue flickering, picking up the sent particles of possible prey near by. When a suitable animal is detected, the python attacks with a swift strike and a bite to the neck, coiling around the prey’s body, tighter and tighter until it eventually dies of asphyxiation. But pythons are also opportunistic feeders, evolving within their environment and don’t miss out on any chance to catch an easy meal, including roadkill. Pythons in general are attracted to the heat radiated from the asphalt roads, in particular during night time. The heat source helps the snake to elevate its body temperature and subsequently aiding in its digestion. If roadkill, such as a rat, raccoon or a bird is detected, the python starts feeding on the dead animal instantly. The feeding can take from a few minutes up to an hour, depending on the cadaver’s size. However, while feeding on roadkill, the snake puts itself in danger of being run over by passing vehicles.
Python Eats Roadkill was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in South Florida 2013. Please don’t forget to like and subscribe for more, if you enjoy watching my video. Thanks for watching.
