Even Adam Smith knew that the market is just a tool. The market is for exchange and trade. That doesn’t mean you rely on it for everything and have no rule of law. If all we worship is money we always get back to the place we have now, with haves and have nots.
If we don’t invest in education, health, basic research, the arts, and create public spaces for all we damn ourselves to our own greed infested dystopia. This is nothing new, nothing new under the sun, the same tales of empire and greed since WWII, Rome, Babylon and forever and beyond. The U.S. has become the new gladiator nation, craving blood.
Only if we tame and dominate the worst devils of our fear, avarice and prejudice can we move ahead. It’s not libertarianism either, not a cross-your-fingers free for all. It’s about a just society of respect, honest trade, endeavor, and resources and opportunity for all.
We have to stop the sham of state capitalism, where the largest and richest are protected at the expense of the public, and the subsidies and backstops are orchestrated to keep the oligarchs happily at the trough.
