The Great Buddha of Leshan, also known as the Great Buddha of Lingyun, is a statue of Maitreya, a Buddhist scripture that states that when Maitreya comes into being, there will be peace in the world.

The Leshan Buddha is 71 metres high, with ears 7 metres long, nose 5.6 metres long, eyebrows 5.6 metres long, eyes 3.3 metres long, shoulders 28 metres wide, fingers 8.3 metres long and feet 8.5 metres wide, and it is said that twenty adults can stand on it. The people of Leshan affectionately refer to this Buddha as the "Old Master Buddha".

Facing the confluence of the Min River, the Qingyi River and the Dadu River, the Great Buddha of Leshan was excavated in the first year of Emperor Xuanzong's reign and took 90 years to build. It took 90 years to excavate. The reason for excavating the Buddha was that at that time, there were often incidents of ships sinking at the confluence of the three rivers, so the Buddha was excavated to guard the water. Strangely enough, since the Buddha was built, the rivers have never been in trouble

The construction of the Great Buddha in Leshan began in the early years of the Tang Emperor Xuanzong's Kaiyuan era (713 AD), not as a tourist development, but as a result of frequent shipwrecks at the confluence of the three rivers, when a venerable priest called Haitong had a grand dream of turning the mountain by the river into a large Buddha statue in order to calm the river's waters. Three generations of craftsmen hammered away at the mountain, one after the other until the Buddha was fully born 90 years later

On either side of the Buddha are nine curved stacks, left over from the construction of the Buddha. To see the full view of the Buddha, you have to follow the path from top to bottom and then up again, the expression of the Buddha is different when viewed from different parts of the path.
