Hi @choogirl : very good post, I came to Panama over 10 years ago and just moved right in hehe. Been married to a Panamanian for 9, and have done some seasonal work in Canada. I'm following now to catch your future posts.
I'm just 2 weeks here at steemit, but started a Panama Blog, here it is

Thanks. I'll definitely check this out.

The lawyer fees are really getting jacked up these days. If you know the right people, you can get referred to a lawyer that only charges $500-$1,000.

I decided to get residency through marriage and the University of Panama provided me with a free lawyer. Their requirements were that I didn't have any locally sourced income and assets less than $5,000 in the country.

Yeah, ok. That's good for people to know. Interesting they don't want you to have assets here. Usually it's the exact opposite. They want you to bring money into the country.

Americans should check this link out: http://bit.ly/2rd0VDE

As a US Citizen you are still subject to paying tax regardless of where you live. The rules for filing income, estate, and gift tax returns and paying estimated tax are the same whether you are in the United States or abroad. Your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you reside.

True. But not everyone on here is from the US.

Thank you for sharing this info. The Spanish is not as difficult as it seems. As soon as you do not feel ashamed anymore to start talking. You will learn it real quick.

Send lots of pictures, please. My favorite part of downtown was not being to get lost, if you could find your way back to that beautiful building with the Panamanian flag on it.

Lol. Biblioteca. I think it's funny this is taught to beginners. I don't know anyone who has ever asked for directions to a library in any language.

I try for the funny, but educational -- it let's you know exactly where my priorities lie. :) Books, food, bathroom -- if the country has those, I am set!

@hsq Well it is and it isn't. I think all languages have stuff that's easy to understand and stuff that's hard.

Alot of useful information in this post. Just saying now I am back in Oz for the past 2 years I made a pact with the Govt. I don't want anything from you and you get nothing from me.... to fund you useless war machine. Yet I don't earn enough to make the threshold as I live self sufficient and don't need much. Unless I want to go walkabout overseas again. Sometime I get the itch to escape the bogan tourists at holiday time where I live and they flock to. I found my bit of paradise as you have. Yay for us.
