A good ship, Verilious, The explorer. Part 1

in explorer •  6 years ago

This is my second dream story I'm posting on steemit. It's definitely not the whole story. I'm not the best writer, I've only started, I hope you enjoy this story about a lost ship in space. I don't write much, if at all generally. I tell parts of my dreams verbally and my friends keep urging me to write them down. One friend recently showed me steemit and said if people liked my stories, That steemit would be good motivation to keep writing. Any constructive feedback would be much appreciated as I'm learning how to write my dreams down! May the universe be with you <3

Verilious, She was a good ship. A long range first contact probe. She specialized in first contact situations. As she explored, She sent back new individuals, new genetic data, new ideas, to the colony. Most of the colonies ships avoided contact with life, skipping over systems with anything more than microbial life. If any of the colonies ships passed a system with space faring life in it, She was sent to make contact.

One of their furthest probes had come across a galaxy that was almost completely colonized. The probe had observed this galaxy, exploring it, for a couple hundred years. The probe was confident that it had located the home planet of the species that colonized the galaxy. It was then that it decided to request a first contact ship. Verilious was chosen due to her close proximity.

She almost made it to the galaxy when it happened. It, Being the incident. A foreign object in hyperspace. A collision. There was no record of this ever happening in the millions of years they had been exploring the universe. It was a glancing blow near the widest point of the ship, but the object, for an unknown reason, turned and then went through her. It tunneled through her. The object tore through, melting the hull, leaving a cavity. Flash melting everything it contacted. The hole was over a hundred miles in diameter. Was it a neutron star, in hyperspace?

Dozens of miles thick was the melted twisted hull around the tunnel the object was tearing through the hull. About half way through Verilious, the object exploded into two large pieces when it hit the main power conduit. One fragment of the object was significantly larger than the other. There were also millions of smaller fragments. The fragments exploded out like a grenade frag. The two larger pieces split off about thirty degrees from each other and continued ripping through the ship. The speed of the objects was greatly reduced but it was still moving, burning through the ship. As the objects tore through the ship their angle turned in a slow curve towards the back of the ship, due to the forward momentum of the ship.

She was oscillating, vibrations ringing through the ship. The larger of the two pieces burst out the side of the ship and was gone, taking chunks of the ship with it from around the exit hole. The contents of all the rooms and hallways along this exploded out into space. Exposed damaged piping was leaking all varieties of fluids and gasses. The ship was bleeding. The super intense heat of the pieces themselves as they were tearing through the ship fried systems far away from the cavity that the object created as it passed through the ship.

The ship itself was now turning along it’s flight angle from the force of the impact. Vast amounts of equipment that was never secured flying around all over the ship, damaging more.. She was a big ship, These things don't happen.

The engines shut down due to the damage. The object had exploded and split into two when it hit the main power conduits for the engines in the central core. The generators started the process to eject the stars.

The smaller of the two pieces of the foreign object hit one of the aft primary generators of the ship. The object was mostly stopped in it’s momentum... The heat.. The object was melting through the generator chamber walls. The smaller object melted through the shell and then collided with the star inside of the generator chamber. The generators were capable of withstanding the star exploding in it’s chambers, even tho this does not ever happen. Unfortunately, due to the damage, and the much more intense heat of the object, the resulting explosion blew out the hole the object created when it tore through the ship.

This explosion blew the massive generator chamber doors off into the tunnel used to eject and implant new stars. The star was then ejected out of the chamber into the tunnel. The star traveled through the chamber tunnel bouncing off the walls, exploding with each contact. The star made it to the exterior of the ship and collided with the external hull bay doors. Colliding with the doors the star exploded several dozen times, over and over. The bay hull doors then failed and the star and material from the interior of the tunnel was ejected from the ship.

The object itself was still in the generator room. The gravity well machines that usually kept the star in place failed to fully turn off, and had captured the object. The parts of the generator that were left working were generating electricity from the heat of the foreign object.

The ship dropped out of hyper space at an angle. Verilious was slowing far faster than it normally would due to the ship starting to spin from the collision. The ship was drifting at near light speed and slowing fast. The vibrations were still wrecking the ship from bow to stern. Now the ship was fully spinning along it’s axis. Power to large areas of the ship was not working and there was no life support. No emergency systems immediately kicked in. The ship stayed dark for several days as it spun into a galaxy.

This all happened so fast, Verilous was asleep when the collision happened. She woke up several days after the collision. She was on the edge of an unidentified galaxy. She didn't know where she was, Unexplored space.

It hurts, It hurts so bad, What happened? She checked her systems, Automation, the emergency systems, had already started repairing the primary mainframe, and that's what allowed her to wake up. The damage was bad. There were four mainframes spread throughout the ship, connected by a conduit that ran through the core. She was awake in the foremost mainframe of the ship. The 2nd mainframe had been torn out, She was disconnected from the two mainframes in the rear half of the ship.

The damage to the central core and the now missing 2nd mainframe had caused her to stay offline during the collision. The ship was well automated, It knew it could not wake up it's captain until it had ensured that waking her up would not damage her further.

The foreign object's initial diameter was calculated at being roughly four hundred and seventy miles. After the initial pierciing of the object through the hull, The hole it burned through the ship was on average nearly a thousand miles in diameter.

There had been biologicals printed and working in the ship when the collision happened, They were all dead. Main engines were not functional.

Verilious checked her systems further and determined the other two star generators were stable. There were three star generators in her, One in the front, one in the middle and one in the rear. Good, Automation had already started the manouvering engines along the sides of the hull in order to slow down, and then stop, her from spinning.

She was cut off from the aft of the ship, She had no idea yet if she was awake back there or not. She had no idea how much damage there was behind the central core cut. The automation was unable to report to her regarding the aft of the ship. Too many systems were damaged. She decided to print some more biological and send them into the aft of the ship to investigate and start the repairs.

The aft section was still dark. That was good. Very good, as it could be brought online and merged without, hopefully without issue. Merging two active systems was not an ideal situation. She was very glad that she would not have to go through merging herself back together. She had never done that before. She had never experienced a collision before.
The ship entered the edge of the galaxy, continuinging to slow down.

As more systems were brought online more automation came alive, more biologicals were printed to assist with repairs.

The current primary goal was repair and locating where she was.

The object which had torn through the ship had caused massive power surges and destroyed many essential systems. Even tho the aft was dark still she had no doubt that the main engines would be inoperable for many years. The central core was completely destroyed and had essentially cut her in two.

She had to get all the thrusters back online, regain flight control of the ship. She didn't understand why the object had penetrated her multiple hulls. She had never collided with anything before, But she was built to withstand collisions with entire solar systems. She also didn't want to collide with any solar systems, they could contain life, She loved life. She had to regain contact and control of the aft of the ship and overall flight control. She was a greeter, not an annihilator. Colliding with an inhabited system would make her sad.

She was in pain, exhausted, She checked the automation to ensure it was still properly working. She would need to be asleep when the aft was merged back with her. She started up the fastest of her corvettes in the forward hanger. This corvette would be sent out to make contact with her colony and let them know what happened.

She launched the corvette, the ship was small compared to her, only about two miles long, nearly needle shaped.
She started up the other corvettes and instructed them to search for empty solar systems and harvest them for resources so she could repair herself.

She was a dark ship, very dark, She could evade all known forms of radar and make herself invisible to space faring species even when parked right next to them, As long as they didn't come her way, as they would detect her if they got too close. She could even negate her own gravity well. She didn't feel completely safe going back to sleep with so much damage but she needed to in order for the automation to reconnect her to some of the smaller processing nodes. So much damage all over.

She went back to sleep.
