The Wallet with your STEEM/SP and SBD will soon be separated from Steemit.com! More security + faster development.

The Roll Out of the new Steem Wallet app is live! HERE.

This is excellent news for two reasons!

More security for all users of Steemit.com and it Speeds up development of Steemit.com!

Reason 1: Security for all users

Steemit.com is the most used frontend of the Steem Blockchain.

Besides the social aspect (posting) it also provides a wallet where you can transfer tokens (STEEM/SBD).

Now, a lot of users are still not familiar with the proper security of their account.

Many login with the MASTER password they were given when they created their account.

The MASTER password allows you to post and to transfer tokens.

But that's not needed most of the time. Most of the time a user just wants to upvote and post content.

Logging in with a key (it's called the posting key) that allows only that and doesn't allow to transfer makes sense because if for some reason your posting key is compromised the 'hacker' can't transfer any of your STEEM/SBD.

Now that's safe!

Logging in with your posting key is going to be forced on users soon on Steemit.com and the reason Steemit Inc. will be able to do that is because they have separated the wallet aspect from Steemit.com.

If it's no longer possible to transfer tokens from Steemit.com there is 100% no reason to login with anything but your posting key.

Reason 2: Speeds up development!

When Steemit inc. no longer has to worry about users using the wrong keys on Steemit.com they can speed up development.

It's just easier to develop if you don't have to fair about security as much as before.

@justinw from Steemit Inc. says it best:

Since condenser (the software that powers steemit.com) will soon not have a need to handle high value keys it will be much easier to add new features to the social media side (steemit.com) without as much security review. This means it will also be much easier to merge in desired community contributions.

I'm hoping with that statement we can expect some cool changes to Steemit.com in 2019.

The roll out is currently ongoing.

Once the Wallet app has been sufficiently tested, the new Social app will be rolled out to steemit.com. At that time, users who attempt to access their Steem wallet will be redirected to wallet.steemit.co, so it was very important to maintain a consistent user experience. At that point, the Condenser Split will be complete.

To access to separate wallet you can go to https://wallet.steemit.co to check it out.

Oh wow, that's going to be a big change! Thanks for letting us know. I'm always a bit nervous when it comes to security and Steem eventhough I don't have the funds like some of us here :) For some reason it feels like there is room for improvement on this topic.

Steem has the best security of all crypto with the different keys. Hopefully hosting the wallet somewhere else outside of Steemit.com will educate more people about it.

Now that make a lot of sense...seperating wallet from the main site....hardly people use wallet ..except when they need to transfer...so better to put off some weight from the main site to give it room for more added features.....thanks for bringing clarity.👍

Wow, that is really cool. I didn't realize they were working on this. It only makes sense though. I am not a big fan of leaving my crypto on exchanges and that is kind of how it feels when I am using the wallet inside of Steemit. Having it separate will definitely be a positive in the long run I think.

I also liked the way they described their focus to deploy things before starting on other things on the roadmap. I have seen some asking about SMTs and disappointed that they have not been mentioned but they miss the fact that they are still thin and focusing on infrastructure at the moment.

I had no idea this was under development, thanks for that information!

Not only it is great because of that 2 reasons, but maybe with this change, people will start to understand and separate the STEEM blockchain from Steemit.

Ahh great to hear it's life, now I can explain other people the steem wallet. Thank you for sharing. You see still some stuff happening. Don't forget the price rise of the buy option in drugwars too and lots of other stuff you can post about. And I missed the radio session of yesterday again. I need to take Fridays off to work on those kind of projects. 😂🤣🤣😎

kinda exciting and they did such a lovely job with the design, fonts and white space, makes the whole thing feel a lot more solid and robust.

It looks nice and familiar at the same time.

Where exactly can you still login with your master key? I can see most users now freaking out because their password doesn't work. I am recieving a notification on one account but not others. Where does one go to view their keys now?

What about other frontends like busy or steempeak? As far as I remember they ask for master key, didn't they?

This is nice to read about the new development. It will surely increase the security for all users

I still think all these password keys are the No. 1 reason why we don't have more people using crypto. It would be great if we could use something like fingerprints, face recognition, voice recognition or anything where we don't have to rely on writing a big password down on paper. The only way to be safe now is to have the master password written down in a few locations but then they all have to be 100% secure. There has to be something better than that.

This post has been included in the latest edition of SoS Daily News - a digest of all the latest news on the Steem blockchain.

I am having issues with some accounts but not others- I can't use my Master Keys on the steemit.com logins, but neither can I access my wallet from wallet.steemit.co either. This is such a HUGE change it should really be discussed more. Where can I access all my keys securely now? @pennsif

Sorry I don't know the answer to that.

On my **60 Minutes of Steem" show on MSP Waves on Thursday (8pm - 9pm) UTC I will have some of the Steemit Inc team. Maybe come along to that and answer a question in the audience. Just tag me so I spot it.

Well it seems now like I will be on the highway again, while this is taking place. But please if you could get to the bottom of this whole login change that would be a fantastic thing to focus on during the episode. Break it down for people who are absolute newbies, and talk about the different permission keys. Right now I can barely find any information on this, and although I know what I'm doing, I'm still confused with the changes. Thank you @pennsif

The new wallet is on the discussion list for the show so hopefully more information will be forthcoming.

Maybe @andrarchy will be doing an explanation video on it.

The main issue I am having is that

sometimes it will forward you
to your private keys and let you login,

but sometimes it wont and just gives you this pink error message.

I am starting to figure this out but for most people they will just get upset and walk away. I look forward to the discussion, I hope you record it and upload it so I can listen later.

ALSO @pennsif

I would love an audio-only version of the show recaps, so if you can convert the video you upload to dtube to MP3 and upload it to dsound as well that would be great. It would be nicer on mobile data.

I will try to be online for that, thank you. It just is such an important thing and I know people who are not as TekSavvy will be completely lost.

Thats a very much simplified explanation of what steem inc narrated, thanks for the effort. Yup its a cool dev so far and I can't wait to experience the further possibilities and developments.
