Timehop, a smartphone application that collects old Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Dropbox photos and posts, has revealed that they suffered a data breach on July 4, 2018. In an announcement made about the incident, the company explained that they noticed the breach while it was still in progress, and while they were able to interrupt it, some data was still taken. Reportedly, certain personal information of 21 million users was accessed by attackers. That includes names, email address, and phone numbers. The company is quick to reassure that no private/direct messages, financial data, or social media content was taken.

According to the released statement, the breach occurred because an access credential to their cloud computing environment, which was not protected by multifactor authentication, was compromised. Timehop is cooperating with security experts and law enforcement officials in order to further investigate the incident.

Due to the GDPR privacy laws, all European users have been notified of the breach. Users are warned to not worry when they are asked to log in when accessing the app, as everyone was logged out as a precaution. In addition, it should be mentioned that no social media accounts can be accessed by unauthorized parties because of this breach.
