Facebook, Reddit, Steem - surveillance, datamining, advertisers and privacy

in facebook •  7 years ago

Edward Snowden recently tweeted something along the lines of "Facebook is a surveillance company rebranded as 'social media'" and it stirred up a lot of discussions. Especially since the media giant recently suspended Cambridge Analytica which according to wikipedia is a privately held company that combines data mining and data analysis with strategic communication for the electoral process. They accused the company of improperly harvesting data from millions of Facebook users and not deleting it after being told to do so. The company denied any wrongdoing and issued a statement saying that the firm "fully complies" with Facebook's term of service.

Edward Snowden went straight for facebook in a tweet yesterday saying

Businesses that make money by collecting and selling detailed records of private lives were once plainly described as "surveillance companies." Their rebranding as "social media" is the most successful deception since the Department of War became the Department of Defense.

I wanted to discuss a bit more the surveillance and compare it to sites like Facebook, Reddit and the Steem blockchain.

Let's look at Facebook

Some users believe that their data on Facebook is super safe because "users who I haven't befriended can't see my activity, status updates and personal information" and "Facebook let's me choose which info I make public".

This is only a small part of your safety, Facebook doesn't care that your ex girlfriend isn't able to stalk you as efficiently anymore since you unfriended her. What Facebook does is sell your information to the highest bidder, this can be ad-agencies that want to improve what they are selling you, the government or other entities that want your information.

Let's go over some ways that facebook sells your activity, this is the part you have complied to according to its privacy policy, you're using its services so it can now do whatever it likes with the data you are handing over to it.

You like a page on Facebook and right after you will notice a lot more ads popping up related to that page. Words you've used the most on Status updates are also sold in a common fashion to advertisers to better target your interests with ads. It collects all data points you input onto their site to better build up a picture of you - even though it may not be completely true its worth more to advertisers.

Now remember that Facebook uses cookies and you can click the "like" button on many other pages and connect it to your Facebook account - yes, all that gets saved. Even though people are aware of the information they are inputting into Facebook, they might not realize the types of correlations Facebook can make based on that data.

There was an interesting analysis of which users are in relationships and how it affected their mood on status profiles, etc. Now this data is from 2014 and I'm sure its algorithms have gotten better and smarter since then.

Even if you are trying to be careful what kind of information you are letting Facebook sell to advertisers so they can brainwash you either directly or subliminally, it is not easy to remember at all times that most apps you are connected through Facebook with are all sending information to Facebook.

Since most users are using most apps on their phones nowadays, imagine what else Facebook can track such as location, files, photos and selfies - the "hey facebook, here get my facial recognition for free!" Even if they don't access your camera without your consent, you are handing them selfies and pictures with your name tagged in so often that their facial recognition keeps getting refined constantly.

Here is a video of a Chinese Street surveillance with object and face recognition, take a look into the future.

Here are some more detailed points copied from fieldguide.gizmodo of how Facebook adds to its user profiles:

Where you’re going:

The big data point Facebook gets when you install its mobile applications is where you are every second of the day. This gives it information on the bands you like seeing, the tourist spots you enjoy, and even the individual stores you walk into. If you’re not happy with this, you can revoke these permissions on Android and iOS

The websites you visit:

So many websites and third-party services use Facebook technologies, from Like buttons to login options, that Facebook has a pretty good idea of what you’re up to when you’re not actually on Facebook. If you want to limit how this data can be collected and used, then you need to do some tidying up in your Facebook settings.

Your financial status:

Even if you never post about your money worries (or joys) on Facebook, it can still build up a fairly good assessment of your financial position to sell on to advertisers. How? By combining data points like your online purchases and where you live, together with records provided by its marketing partners from various sources.

Status updates you almost post:

Facebook can tell when you’re about to write something and then think better of it, as per a 2012 research paper (though the contents of your self-censored musings aren’t logged). If you’re thinking of making a drunken boast or a barbed comment and then think better of it, Facebook sees your indecisiveness.

Apps you install:

It’s not just Facebook’s privacy policy you need to worry about, but also how third-party apps are using your data—while a Facebook quiz may seem innocuous, telling the world which bands you’ve seen gives another data point to advertisers. Pay close attention to the permissions apps ask for and remove the ones you don’t need.

Apps your friends install:

Bad news—apps your dimwitted friends install can gather information you’re sharing with them too. To limit this, go to the Apps section of Settings on Facebook, click Edit under Apps others use, and then untick all the categories of information you’re not comfortable sharing. Alternatively, unfriend the worst offenders.

When you’re feeling low:

Another trick Facebook’s algorithms can do is make a pretty good guess about when you’re at a low ebb. This is one of the data points Facebook promises it isn’t selling on to advertisers, but it’s a sign of the way all these various social media signals can be combined together to make some revealing conclusions about you.

Facebook’s other apps:

Even if you barely touch Facebook, the social network can still harvest information about you through the other apps it owns, like Instagram and WhatsApp. If you want to stop this from happening, you can switch off data sharing in WhatsApp, though you’re more or less stuck with it if you’re an Instagram user.

To switch it shortly to Reddit

This post is already getting longer than I planned. People say that Reddit is completely different because there you don't have to input a lot of information to create an account and you can remain "anonymous". In a way the signup process is a lot similar to Steemit, except that Reddit also relies on advertisement revenue to continue working and earning such as Facebook. Compared to Facebook it's different in a sense cause all information you've input through posts and comments are public like on Steem which means you usually have to be more careful of what you type since you know everyone will be able to access that information in forever.

On Facebook you feel a lot more safe posting whatever you like because you get the feeling that "only your friends" can see it - this sense of safety can quickly be removed considering Facebook is selling all of that information to anyone who asks.

While Reddit may be similar to Steem in a way that your posts and comments are public which means you can track a user through certain sites that use certain algorithms such as https://snoopsnoo.com/ where you can input any reddit users name in and it will give you some surprising important and correct information of that user, well unless you've been feeding Reddit lies - which many do considering this is the internet. It wouldn't surprise me if sites like that were to be developed for Steemians as well soon enough - here we can even track other users and tags we vote on than just comment/post about.

As long as you don't post selfies or your location and other important info on Reddit you'd think you are safe compared to Facebook, right? Well that would be the case unless the two companies start matching browser/ip addresses or the bulks of information you've input into both to assume which users could be the same.

Here is where Steem is different, being open-source and all we can choose our own front-end to use. If we want to truly remain anonymous we create accounts anonymously, we don't give out any personal information about ourselves on the blockchain, etc. Most importantly though, Steem and Steemit don't rely on advertisement revenue so they don't have the need to sell their users information to advertisers/others. Whatever you want people to know of yourself is already public on the blockchain.

Hope this post helped you differentiate a bit between the 2 (soon to be 3) social media giants and how they operate. :)

I can't imagine how much could mine Instagram / Facebook themselves.

Hi everyone! pls do help to upvote this post for my friend's father's heart. They need our support right now..

on it

Yes friend @bronevik, you can really get too much information out of the profiles of social networks, those fighters against corruption have more information, and facebook and instagram can undermine a lot really xd @acidyo

Facebook know better know myself than me. In future people will realize that how it really affecting their lives because they are playing with your minds. You like something so you searched or discussed about it but you don't want to buy it but they are putting pressure on your mind to buy the thing by consistently putting adv. in front of you. This is reason Mark Zuckerberg bought whatsapp as well as instagram so that he get more information about the people. Steemit is better than any social media sites..that why they are banning cryptocurrencies ads because they feel insecure from the increasing popularity of steemit. Steemit is freedom and future.

zuckorborg.jpg

I saw something which I found rather amusing on Facebook. It was a group where people were testing their security by asking others what they saw.

One person smugly came in and said "me".

What followed were a series of "nopes", "nothing" and "can't see a thing".

"Perfect" they said.

Then one individual came in and said "you have two children - boy and a girl - you have red hair (or at least have had it that way in the last 3 months), your husband has short brown hair, he is 37"... and it went on.

Turned out that they'd gone to the display photo (because these are all visible), found a like from the husband and then read about all her information from his perspective instead.

Goes to show, you're never as locked down as you think you are!

Yeah, that's a concern. You can lock down your profile, but someone else may leak your information. Did her husband lock down his profile after that? That's the real question.

I believe so, first thing she went off to secure!

Wow! Really? People like checking profiles on Facebook. They love pranking others. Thanks for letting us know.

The answer is simple: don't use them. Honestly, I've been practicing that for a while now and it is the most effective strategy.

I'm thinking more and more that the web (not the Internet, but the web) has been completely lost to "them", and it's time for the a web to get popular. Several blockchain projects are on this problem and while there's nothing great yet, it will come.

Even thought everything you mentioned is true, I don't see the majority of the people worried about their information being monetized by thee giants.

It is like this was non important for them and how "normal" websites work.

Lately I have been thinking about the possible implications of all these companies with so much information about individuals, and researching AI simultaneously.

Have you read news like this one from forbes ?

My favorite part about having facebook/instagram is that they target ads to me through listening to what the fuck I'm saying. Every week we get some weird fucked up ads shown to us within a couple of hours of when we had a conversation about said things/people. We were talking about her coworker who is wanting to get married and is also a lesbian. Like 4 hours later she's getting wedding ads for lesbians on Instagram. Wow, what a weird coincidence! There's no way we're being snooped on, nah.

you're freaking me out man!!

i once bought a medical product at walgreens and hours later was getting ads for that exact product. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Everyone should look into 3 things - The Brave browser, DuckDuckGo, and the software company known as Substratum - the trifecta of privacy, anonymity and freedom on the world wide web.

Check out my post on Substratum:

https://steemit.com/substratum/@theskim/internet-freedom-in-the-age-of-information-the-time-for-substratum-is-now

More coming on Brave and DuckDuckGo soon.

The fact that most apps do that is fucking annoying, to say the least. But I enjoy the fact that even hardcore skeptics of how invasive these companies can be are made aware of practices like this once they figure out what's going on after a few incidents like this happen to them.

It is very unfortunately, if this really happened, how they (Facebook) has violated the basic rights of its users with no permission.
I personally feel very in disadvantage with this incident, fortunately since active in Steemit about 6 months ago, I have very rarely update the status on Facebook, although my basic information and data has been stored since 6 years ago in their application.
What can I do for the next time?
Thank you @acidyo for this information.

i read Snowdens tweet earlier this week and it really packed quite the punch. here was my retweet and response:

Snowden dropping truth bombs about the inherent evils of social media platforms' mechanisms of monetization allows for a discourse where the impact outweighs the irony of the post itself.

its so true though, and i think part of the reason why people are so casual about it is - it doesnt even feel like theres a way to prevent or stop it. the only way is to have never participated in these platforms at all. i have severly cut back on what i put on facebook and other Social Media 1. because im trying to limit what im giving them and 2. it provides little to no benefit for me.

and 3. nobody is doing anything about it! the government surely doesnt care. politicians - yeah right. its completely unethical and also terrifying to think what companies and governments know about our daily lives and habits.

Really is this the facebook we have been believing soo far...this shit has been selling our personal data to some government or something they really suck.....
Really if we compare the same thing with the steemit , anyone even the illitratest person can find the difference....you spend your time here creating content and make money out of that ..get knowledge and this aint selling anything from us....while on the other hand the Mr. Facebook....(i know whosoever is on the steemit platform wud have lost the interest in any other social media platform by now .....) what does that even provide to us....consuming our precious time , our data usage and now the personal info....
F**k facebook....

With smart phones, social media and online shopping they have essentially total information awareness. They know more about you than you do. And of course their primary goal being surveillance and control is evidenced by all the recent blatant censorship they have been implementing. Obviously censoring things pays better than letting people post what they want.

Fuck Censorship, Fuck Net Neutrality, Fuck illegal spying, Fuck the corrupt corporations, Fuck the corrupt government.

That's all I have to say

lol, yeah.. I didn't even bring up censorship at all in this post as it would have never ended. :D

Oh no.. I've come to think of it... this is the way government operatives will come straight to your door when they sense your talking against it. With this information, they will easily monitor what the public is up to. We easily let all this knowledge out as we have fun when interacting with our friends, but thanks to @acidyo, we have every reason to shun the platform if that's what is required. Users on facebook mostly talk about the previous nights they spent at the bar, where they spent the weekend, and this all goes back to them when they speak ill about the government. Let's have people join steemit where people are all about writing content and not what happened to them the night before.

The current state of surveillance in the world is unfortunate... Google, Facebook, etc need to be reigned in massively. Everyone should check out the Brave broswer, and instead of using Google for your search engine, consider using something like DuckDuckGo. Using those two services in tandem willl essentially eliminate all trackers, block adds, and make you MUCH more anonymous while surfing the web. Don't use Google anymore - take back your data and don't feed the surveillance beast!

Most importantly though, Steem and Steemit don't rely on advertisement revenue so they don't have the need to sell their users information to advertisers/others.

Not quite true. I wrote about that months ago
https://steemit.com/@drakos/steemit-s-disturbing-ads-policy

Ads and Analytics Partners, brought to you by https://steemit.com/privacy.html :

We may partner with third-party advertisers, ad networks, and analytics providers to deliver advertising and content targeted to your interests and to better understand your use of the Services. These third parties may collect information sent by your computer, browser, or mobile device in response to a request for content, such as unique identifiers, your IP address, or other information about your computer or device.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of that before. Hmm.

Wow. This is so revealing. We often throw away our sense of privacy in the name of socializing, especially with those you do not normally wanna share your thoughts or data with.

The fact however is that most of these companies can't be sued because you signed a terms of use agreement when you signed up for the use of the platform. Almost everyone do not bother to consider the contents of those agreements.

It's good you have pointed out how to check and uncheck our accounts to make it more secure. I can now make my account as safe as possible.

I haven't seen you writing for a long time. That was unexpected.

PS: I haven't read it yet, but I will and for the moment I wanted to say that it is good to see you writing again, this is how I started to follow you :)

I was just recently thinking about how we used go back and forth with memes back in early to mid 2017! This took me back!!

It really is scary how much information is on Facebook and how privacy invasive it truly is! It would not surprise me at all if everyone in the world had a matrix score with every little detail known about them.

Interesting post! I never thought about FB as a surveillance company disguised as a social media company. This makes complete sense. I also liked the meme with everyone now a days just talking to their wire tap like it’s nothing. So true! Thanks for the post!

i'm trying to figure out how to detach myself from google. the problem is that i'm an android user, and apple isn't much better as an alternative.

also, google the search engine has no equal.

but i hate that google knows so much about me

Mark Fuckerberg is a goon, like Musk, Gates and other geniuses the elite is presenting us. To make us believe in the system the smart drop out can succeed. The real owners are the 0.01% who own the whole show. Just don’t believe the hype.

Facebook and google? HA
STEEM AND BRAVE!

Someone information can easily be access and manipulated through Facebook. I think reddit is the answer to all facebook trauma

gooooood thank you for sharing

That is a great analysis.
I've stopped using Facebook but the damage is probably already done. I didn't know of all that.
Facebook sucks.
I hope more people learn about steemit because when they do they won't care about Facebook

I Strongly agree with you dear. Facebook's surveillance has always come across as #sketchy and they're now #datamining non-users. This is why it's difficult for me to stay on there,

steemit is still the best

What surprises me is that how stupid this global collusion think that people are. It never shocked me though. What shocks me is our willingness to prove their assumption of our stupidity correct.

Sir @acidyo,
Now it is not possible to get ideas about the market, but we have to start working on how we can take this forward.

They have an eye on you, and they’re keeping a lot of data stored somewhere.

Thanks for this post, it has really opened my eyes about facebook activities on our accounts.

Thanks for sharing this photography is very nice post i love post

Steemit is the best

Few weeks ago I decided to do some cleaning on my FB, I spent a weekend unfollowing all my friends and erasing all my ad's interest, I didn't know that I had ad's interest but I had sooo many, some were just crazy stuff that I'm not even interested in but in each case FB says that is there because I clicked on an ad related to it.

After reading your post I went to check back to check if I still had no ad's interests but I already had some random interest like the University of Connecticut (I don't even know where is Connecticut). FB says that is because I liked an ad related to it but nowadays I'm using FB exclusively as my Birthday's calendar...

Cambridge Analytica is one of many companies that has been caught with its hands in the cookie jar. And they will not be the #LAST. Stealing, misusing and selling users info is commonplace in the Tech. World. The only way to #STOP the madness is to refrain from going to their sights.
Thanks for sharing this info.

True our info is public courtesy of the blockchain thanks to blockchain technology. Great post though!

I found the post highly educative and I thank you for the education.

What I would like to know is can this data that facebook has at its fingertips, not be sold to governments if they are seeking information on their citizens that could lead to the arrest of criminals?

I see that mostly CCTV's are encouraged but spying by government is discouraged. I think a community deserves someone who can account for everyone who lives within Its confines. This is in utopia though.

The reality is man will abuse such power. They will use it for something nefarious because they can. Any application that takes people's data without informing them of the consequence is a thief and a liar.

It's just sad that the populace need the social media.

An impacting post @acidyo

This is a great heads up on the so called "privacy of facebook". If such website as snoop were created for steemit what going to be effects on steemians and the anonymity of steemit ?

oii ka follow kei ngen ka vote kei hy, bek sombong that beuh.
@abangkece

I thought it was an interesting article comparing with Facebook, reddit. I resteemed this post. I want Japanese people to know.

There are many questions, for example, what do you think happens if facebook adopts blockchain? I have heard that facebook is interested in blockchain.

Its no longer a secret that these giants sell our data. As you rightly pointed out,Steemit doesn't do the same although it seems to be not respecting privacy because of it's blockchain nature!
But I can't speak against FB because it gave us all an avenue to express ourselves. Before the arrival of FB nothing was there. If you had an opinion about certain things, you had to be a well known person in order to your voice to be heard. But that scenario has been changed. Now I can express my views on anything, even if it is against Donald Trump,on FB.But I do agree,Steemit is a revolution.Noway we can compare FB with it as it appears to be the stone age for Steemians!

Snowden Edward Snowden tweeted @ 17 Mar 2018 - 23:12 UTC

Businesses that make money by collecting and selling detailed records of private lives were once plainly described… twitter.com/i/web/status/9…

Disclaimer: I am just a bot trying to be helpful.

Control and abuse of power is huge problem now adays

Just finished to read your article. It was pretty good actually keeping me focused to the end while reading. Now I believe that your logo fits pretty good. These days I lost almost all the hope I had in true democracy and freedom anyway so more control from facebook and stuff is just something normal. At least I can live a life and at least I have a few hours left to do things that I like when I get home after work.

You are very right. All the info provide was right. Every activity that facebook see u doing more than three times you will see it ads. Recently I was searching sneakers on facebook and within a minute I got an app on it. I was shocked but I have now understood it through your post. Thanks for sharing now I know how to provide my info there.

Isn't it even worse here, where every user puts his data onto the blockchain, readable for everybody?
Undeletable.
Unhidable.
What kids pictures I did see here from users is even worse.
Don't they care about their kids future?
Well, at least they made some Upvotes and money with them...

The thing that we have to worry about is also givving permission to those applications, a lot of them ask for permission to use our michrophone or camera or even to give them complete permission as an admistration. We will be soon controled very hard and the only people that can be safe are they who live in forests, but even there I think there is mobiles that work and satelites internet, so we are all not safe at all.

(soon to be 3)

Can I get an Amen?

But I’m already regretting that #introduceyourself post way back when that included a selfie.

Great article. I'm tempted to go unplug from facebook right now.....and turn off my cell phone, start riding a bike while wearing a mask. While some of that's a joke I should be more diligent in using a VPN. Have an upvote.

Well thanks for letting us know !well if I had the capability man I would have erased all the details that I laid to Fb over the time !

Will sure be careful from now on !

I had a weird incident, my friend's boyfriend had proposed and I was the first person she texted to tell the news.
5 minutes later fb offered bridal dress options.
We are exposed and more vulnerable to be prisoners of a select powerful few.

Wow.....
Wonderful post..
Have really learnt alot. Tnx for posting

Errr...

Another trick Facebook’s algorithms can do is make a pretty good guess about when you’re at a low ebb. This is one of the data points Facebook promises it isn’t selling on to advertisers...

From the Guardian:

Last year, leaked documents revealed how Facebook had told advertisers they had the capacity to monitor posts in real time and identify when teenage users were feeling “insecure”, “worthless” and “need a confidence boost”.

That kind of finite information is invaluable to advertisers – whether selling products or political candidates – as it helps them more effectively tailor and target their message to individual users on the platform.

That data is sold. Big time, it is among the most important data to play the emotions and thus for targeted micro-campaigns.

Addendum Edit:

The big data point Facebook gets when you install its mobile applications is where you are every second of the day. This gives it information on the bands you like seeing, the tourist spots you enjoy, and even the individual stores you walk into. If you’re not happy with this, you can revoke these permissions on Android and iOS

This data is especially important to create your demographic profile, and also plays a role in how Facebook assesses your spending power. Facebook has recently found another trick to access this location data with Facebook WiFi, which is offered freely by establishments usually in exchange for a "Like". The make use of Facebook WiFi's location finder location needs to be on 24/7, not merely when using the app.

The websites you visit...

Facebook, just like Google, makes use of so-called beacons. These are small cookies which can not only read out your entire browsing history (saved in your browser since you last deleted it) but also can be linked to beacons cross-platform. So Facebook, and Google, can recognize the same user using different browsers, or even devices. They claim not to d such when the user is logged out but there's no hard evidence for that claim. The cookies are still on the devices.

Best to switch to the Brave browser on lap/desktop. :)

Google Bonus: Google also tracks apps which have Google Ads in. The Google Ads code comes with much more than just one line of code, as should be. This code does the same as previously mentioned beacons and ties everything back to one user (profile).

Facebook sheeplings remind me of the Royal Wedding.

Very funny video and so true. ☺ lol

The thing with steemit is that we won't be able to sell our data if we choose to do so in upcoming projects ( for ex. datawallet ) because it is already free and available. So additional layers of privacy as options would be great in my opinion because it would let you choose what to sell to advertisers.
P.S what has happened to decenmemes?

I'm seriously thinking about deleting my Facebook account. I only need it for work sometimes (to advertise our services), but other than that there's no point in having an account. This article just pushed me towards doing it now =)

Thank goodness for steemit !!!

If I didn't need it for my work, I'd dump FB in a minute. Think I'll go share this over there.

If you have a problem you don't know what to do, remember you have a father in heaven!, pick up your telephone, dialy they number, JESUS.....
This is a song for your post..

i like this post..such as facebook and steem..so nice post..

If you'll gonna think about it, Facebook holds almost every data of a person who uses it. Security is always an issue at any platform so I guess this should treat crypto way better because Facebook , Twitter and any social platform has security issues too not just crypto.

Hola amigo
Nos observan desde todos lados, lugares, páginas, bancos, empresas de seguros y en fin no vamos a dejar de ser perseguidos y observados.

aku pantas bergembira dengan postingan@acidyo

good post

It's scary how much privacy we've sacrificed for the sake of convenience. I know that I'm guilty of making that trade-off more and more. Thanks for the informative post!

very nice and great info
please support me i need your help
https://steemit.com/finance/@muhammadabid/price-targets-for-the-crypto-market

updates you almost post is interesting I think considering what goes on to make that happen. That means that an accidental paste of a key but not posted still gets tracked?

Would be interesting if google released a list of their 'almost asked' considering what people actually ask.

Nice points @acidyo This is very important in our day and age. I hope we are wrong on some levels and its not so bad as we think. But never know what else is hiding in the background of our apps, phones, etc...

wonder if you've heard the phrase "if it's free, you're not the customer; you're the product." Do you believe this? I do. I don't believe Facebook has a vested interest in protecting the rights of its users. In fact, they made quite transparent their support for a current bill, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, a bill facilitating the private exchange of user information between companies and the National Security Administration.

yeah I do agree with you. Facebook sells data for millions for sure. thats why I started using Facebook less and started using steemit platform a lot. at least a decentralized community.

First things first @acidyo; LOVE the meme "hey wiretap, do you have a recipe for pancakes" hahaha so true!! At least in the 60's, people were aware and concerned about privacy issues. Today there are way too many "dimwitted" friends who either don't care, are too lazy to find out about it themselves, or just too "dimwitted" to really understand how important this really is!!

I used to be on Facebook and clicked all of those boxes in the settings to try and keep things relatively private, I never posted photos much at all, and never listed to the whole world where I was going every second of my day. The first time an ad popped up about a recent search I'd done, I thought, "hmmm that's a little weirdly coincidental", and up went a red flag. The second time it happened, I thought, "I'm out ! Way too creepy".

We've got Orwell's Big Brother from 1984 breathing down our necks and what's really terrifying, is that the majority of the population doesn't seem to care in the least!

Thanks for the post...such valuable information!!

Nice work. Admired to read this post. Just followed you. There should be privacy option in steem like there should be a option to make comments and replies hidden. Thats a suggestion.

Certainly each giant social media has its own advantages in terms of personal data security account owner even to applications that are very good for use as a medium of interaction between fellow owners of social.
Having lots of friends on social media is something very fun,
so .. any social media is equally very good to use as a place to share the information between friends in social media

Nice write up dear, thanks for sharing

Yeah, information about us is being sold all the time without our permission. More people need to open their eyes, because this is so unfair... It feels really uncomfortable knowing that your information is flying around to all kinds of entities.

That's some sick stalkering on everyone. I have a feeling like they think about normal people like they are animals in a paddock.
Trying to control everyone and everything.

Wow, @acidyo, I suspected it was bad (part of the reason for my migration to Steemit) but did not realize to what extent.

I had begun to notice this with my Gmail, frankly, after searching for something on Google, I find it advertised in my mail. Worse, after typing something up in my email, I find an advertisement for it!

So, if they go through your email, know what where you surf, when you're up/down (as a non-tech savvy guy) I've surrendered to the idea that once I turn on my computer, I'm addressing The World At Large!

As an artist, I've nearly made peace with this idea (which is fairly radical, given my private temperament and conservative culture I come from). But, now, I tell myself as artists we are required to strip naked down to the soul and that, when we think we are being most intimate that is when we have a chance to touch strangers, and possibly share a truth that is Universal.

Stay safe, online & off _/|\_

A very informative and interesting article, thank you. It was the picture comparing the sixties to today which really made me both stop and chuckle at the same time.

That video with cars and face recognition. I'm a bit scared now.
Do they do the same with my laptop when I watch a movie in the bathroom??
Damn perverted bastards!!

To see that video is soo depressing don't get me wrong i knew that's happening right now "surveillance" and more like "Social Credit System " but see it "live" ...

From what I see, Facebook keeps us under constant surveillance and apparently we do not even know what is happening.

It's good that I stopped using Facebook for a long time, and the others I do not even have an account... I only use Steemit that I love and apart it helps me financially in these dark times in my country.

I remember the day I realized my actions were being followed. My husband at the time was stationed in Hawaii and I was in the states. I had moved recently but had not put in a change of address anywhere. I lost my credit card and called the bank to inform them and they said they would mail me another card right away. I said I have moved you will need my new address, they stated they had it. And they did. I called my husband and ask him if he had informed anyone of my move and he said he had not. It changes your perspective on many levels.

nice posting brother @acidyo 👍👍

Tips to avoid being flagged

Thank You! ⚜

This is why I think it is not a good idea to require users entering their mobile numbers during the registration process, as it is done by Steemit.

The ads are basically like cars in the GTA games; once you start driving one, that's the only one you see everywhere!

yes 100%, unfortunately, this is the world we live in
google, facebook we just giving them our privacy, they know what talking about, google even know what you want to buy, Facebook knows who you are and your friends and the sad parts its all our fault.

we giving them all these information they not even need to hard try.

and remeber kids the NSA is watching, always watching and listining.

But buddy I believe it's not only Facebook that stores your data, it's now all over the internet like when I open websites other than facebook same things pop up again and again, same is the case with YouTube, so I guess they now access your IP address and collect your data, which is kind of weird.

Nice post i have followed you😍

Mother Facebook and father Google always know best.

I used to work as a community manage and that is how I learnt that all these social networks, Facebook in particular, are now focusing more on business. But, from my world knowledge, how useful is it now to even be on Facebook if the audience who hangs out there are retired people, usually our parents, whom we are constantly trying to get away from?

I don't think there is freedom unrestricted in the world.

Congratulations @acidyo!

The internet has really changed (or at least the way people use it has). I remember when I was a kid back in the early-to-mid 2000s the internet was a much more anonymous place. Not that many people used their real names. There weren't any huge social media sites yet. Nowadays people use the internet a lot more and they are much more likely to share personal information on it. The governments of the world like to take advantage of stuff like this.

Nice
