Social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat, increase the risk of nervous breakdown in users over 30, says a new study. According to the researchers, individuals between the ages of 18 and 29, like Millennials or Millenials, are better able to deal with the emotions generated by social networks than their elders.
Contrary to popular belief and many studies, the youngest are not the most affected by social networks. Exposed from an early age to Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter, they would be much better than older users to deal with negative sides of social networks. Users born at a time when Facebook did not exist have a harder time acclimating to this new way of communicating, says the study by Bruce Hardy and Jessica Castonguay, professors at Temple University Klein College.
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter: social networks cause anxiety among people over 30
"The connection between social networks and mental well-being varies greatly with age," say the researchers. Based on a series of data collected in 2016 in the medical context, they even say that the use of social networks tends to reduce the signs of anxiety in individuals between 18 and 29 years.
Given this new finding and several previous studies, social networks would be harmful only for children, adolescents and older. "Starting in 2012, the rates of happiness and self-esteem among children have begun to decline: researchers are establishing a direct link with the emergence of social media," says Dr. Benningfield, a prominent psychiatrist and pediatrician of the Vanderbilt School.
Yet, according to a recent OpinionWay study, 23% of 767 young people aged 18 to 30 surveyed think that Facebook is negative for society. 54% of these young adults surveyed have even thought about closing their Facebook account. Social networks do not they affect the 18-29 years old? And you ? What do you think of the impact of social networks on our lives? Are we all affected?
